RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) A string of racist social media posts courtesy of two incoming freshmen was brought to the attention of school officials at N.C. State University. Those two students will not be allowed to attend the university in the fall.
Outrage on social media from university alumni and current students alike at the initial reluctance of the university to do anything about it helped bring the since-deleted social media posts to light.
Screenshots of the posts were leaked by many on social media which came on the heels of nationwide protests in the wake of George Floyds death.
We are appalled and disheartened that any member of the NC State community would choose to make such abhorrent statements. To say the words and actions in those posts stand in complete opposition to NC States values is an understatement, the university said in a statement.
In the coming academic year, the university says it will require every student, faculty and staff member to complete diversity and inclusion learning modules.
Other instances of hate speech and racist social media posts continue to be investigated by university officials.
The Wolfpack community deserves a campus environment where they feel safe, supported, respected and valued. The university vehemently condemns racism and all other forms of discrimination. We are dedicated to doing all we can to protect, promote and advance a culture of diversity, equity and inclusive excellence at NC State, the universitys statement read.
The university has not made it clear whether the students will be allowed to attend school after the fall semester.
Oh yeah, dude, you can say whatever the hell you please, free speech, 1st Amendment. And the bonus? You get to deal with the consequences. If I say your mother wears Army boots, I might get beaten up, but it is my right to say it and risk getting beat up. I say the college has the right to refuse admission to whoever it wants on whatever basis it determines.
This is why we absolutely need federal legislation to prevent employers from firing anyone based on any of their social media posts, or those posted by someone else who may have caught the other individual on camera. This also applies to colleges and universities Accepting and expelling students. And yes, we need to enforce that all social media companies are indeed platforms and stop all censorship immediately. And I literally dont give a damn that this isnt a conservative position. Our culture is literally at stake. We must stop these companies and schools from silencing free speech under threat of job loss or expulsion.
It’s a government school.
They don’t get to censor speech.
1st Amendment “dude”.
Speech is free, but it’s not consequence free. Good, cheap lesson for these kids.
In my 72 years, I've met very few people who do not have some sort of prejudice. Many who do not are either those of very limited social contact experience or are those incapable of making inferences and judgements.
Many who are quite proud of their lack of racial prejudice nevertheless have very strong tribal prejudices, e.g. ""They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations" or "Donald Trumps supporters could be put in a 'basket of deplorables'.
BTW, ALL incoming college students are "stupid" and/or ignorant and/or uneducated. That is the whole purpose of a good college - to educate students, to make them aware of new facts, cultures and peoples. To teach them to examine facts, evaluate the presenter of those facts and their competence and veracity, compare those new facts with their existing knowledge, then make inferences and judgements based on the sum total of their knowlegge and experience.
These new inferences and judgements enable them to more quickly and accurately make preliminary evaluations of new information and experiences. This might be called "pre-judging in light of past experience".
"Once bitten, twice shy" applies to animals at petting zoos, strange dogs and rattlesnakes, among other situations in life. It is a prejudice that may save you inconvenience, pain, suffering or an untimely death. Some prejudices are good, though they need to be routinely reevaluated and adjusted.
As a parting thought:
"Oh, she sailed away on a bright and sunny day,
On the back of a crocodile.
You see, said she, hes as tame as he can be
"Ill ride him down the Nile.
The croc winked his eye as she bade them all good-bye,
Wearing a happy smile.
At the end of the ride the lady was inside,
And the smile was on the crocodile!
The easy way to look at this is to ask rhetorically “If the situation were reversed would the consequences be the same”
In this day and age of constant monitoring, it’s a wonder that anyone is worthy of attending NC State if this is their standard.
I can remember my mom singing that crocodile song!
“Social media is not your friend.”
Certainly you gotta be careful about broadcasting a message to millions with your name attached to it.
I don’t say things on this board that I think could be damaging to me but I’m glad we post anonymously ... until the authorities come to Jim Robinson and ask for our email addresses.
What little I use, the same except no family.
I’m looking at turning off some things such as Smugmug as well. Never sold a thing off there but my port used to help me get side photo jobs. It’s all boring stuff but who knows what will be deemed bad.
My GH4 has probably been powered on a dozen times this year.
I used to enjoy photography and video production.
One of the stock agencies I used to send to the most has cut the commission rates to where they were over 10 years ago. I see very little point in submitting and will turn that off soon.
Will raging Fascism fade away or are we truly on the road to Communism? It all started in our schools and colleges. If we do not get control of the education (indoctrination) system, the country will surely fall. As Bezminov warned us, it starts in the schools. Now, they have control of an entire generation of useful idiots. He tried to warn us a generation ago, but few were listening. We owe this predicament to our own complacency.
What about left-wing and black racists posts? I rather doubt the posts were racist at all.
What gives a public school the right to use your words against you? Also who decides which words are hurtful?
There is no way a White can win. Even saying “It’s OK to be White” is now called racist.
It will get to the point where that won’t be enough. They will demand that you’ve actively praised BLM is Social Media. Having no social online presence at all, will be enough for them to accuse you of “being silent”.
But if you’re a Democrat Governor, you can say whatever you want.
Who defines “Prejudice”?
Seriously tho. The same goes for Democrat nominees.
“I can remember my mom singing that crocodile song!”
My Mom had a friend who sang the Crocodile song to us. She also sang an song about, “There once was a man and he was an encyclopedia...” but I remember very little of it.
She used to delight my sister and me when she visited!
get-rich quick scheme: make racist posts on social media after applying and being accepted to this university. When the university kicks you out you sue them for infringing upon your first amendment rights and you make millions (since its a state school its considered to be part of the government)
