The deed signed in 1890 giving Virginia control of the Robert E. Lee statue on Richmonds Monument Avenue prevents its removal, a lawsuit filed Monday that led to a pause on the states plans for taking it down claims.
In an 18-page complaint filed Monday, William C. Gregory, the great-grandson of two signatories of the deed, argues that under the terms of the 1890 agreement and a legislature-approved resolution, the state is supposed to consider the monument and the area around it "perpetually sacred" and "faithfully guard it and affectionately protect it."

Coonman wants What???
It needs to be replaced with a statue of George Floyd. Holding a gun to a pregnant woman’s belly.
Northam isn’t worthy enough to shine Robert E. Lee’s Bootstraps.
These Confederate monuments are the only things standing between blacks and happiness. Once they are gone, we will all live in peace and harmony and blacks will unlock their full potential. Especially if we replace every single one with a statue of Robert Byrd.
They are afraid to look into that mirror.
I have done well with my life; I can only wish that my life had been as NOBLE and HONORABLE as General Robert E. Lee’s!
BLM will seize the opportunity.
They have vandalized, defaced, burnt and defiled dozens of churches and synagogues in the last two weeks. ( Curiously, no mosques.)
See Dan Greenfield’s column.
Northam friend of the black man
Better yet, Virginia. Just get a new Governor.
And then the family can put up the monument again ( on their reclaimed land)
Not Al Jolson?
All truth about General Lee.
Add to the list these Facts:
President Andrew Johnson, after the surrender, issued a Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon-There were fourteen excepted classes, and members of those classes had to make special application to the President. Lee made both an application to Grant and wrote to President Johnson on June 13, 1865.
Lee signed his Amnesty Oath administered to him from President Johnson on Oct. 2nd, 1865. So he was to be Pardoned, and was to have regained his citizenship. But neither actions happened.
His Oath was ‘Lost’ because the Secretary of State William H. Seward had given Lee’s application to a friend as a souvenir and the State Department had thus pigeonholed needed Oath. It was found by an archivist 100 years later in 1970, piled in with old State Dept. records. And finally— Robert E. Lee’s full rights of Citizenship were restored by Congress in 1975.
So much for all the mouths and liars, among the many lies repeated so often.
Aunt Jemima?
The Supreme Court faced a similar (identical?) question last year with regard to the Bladensburg (MD) Peace Cross.
EXACTLY SO.
AND before anyone asks, ALL of the monuments on Monument Ave are PROTECTED FOREVER in the same way. = The Commonwealth of Virginia can lawfully do only ONE thing: The Commonwealth can give the land, with the statues intact, back to the families & organizations that donated the land & statues.
In other words, Governor “COON-MAN” (or “CON MAN” if you prefer) & his crowd of CLOWNS, BIGOTS, PUBLIC FOOLS & LEFTISTS are LOSERS once more.
A Personal Note: I would LOVE to have Governor Doug Wilder back in the Statehouse. = He was a Chief Executive that virtually ALL Virginians could be proud of.
Yours, TMN78247

When Richard Daley wanted the Meigs Field property, he illegally sent in bulldozers in the middle of the might to wreck the runway.
