Lawsuit: Deed prevents Lee statue's removal; Northam says 'divisive' monument 'needs to come down'

The deed signed in 1890 giving Virginia control of the Robert E. Lee statue on Richmond’s Monument Avenue prevents its removal, a lawsuit filed Monday that led to a pause on the state’s plans for taking it down claims.

In an 18-page complaint filed Monday, William C. Gregory, the great-grandson of two signatories of the deed, argues that under the terms of the 1890 agreement and a legislature-approved resolution, the state is supposed to consider the monument and the area around it "perpetually sacred" and "faithfully guard it and affectionately protect it."

The deed and the legislative resolution make an ironclad case against the governor.

Maybe you could just cover it up with your old klan robe, if you’re done using it.

There are thousands of deeds that say No Italians...No Jews...No Blacks

The law of the land over ruled them.

I think the win will be at a Federal Level where Congress deemed both Union and Confederate soldiers as Veterans.

This new animosity against the Confederate Soldiers is sick. They died for their beliefs at the time...

Laws don’t mean anything to Democrats. They’ll just remove it.

Legally, yes. I think the governor will have it removed anyway. If a judge tells him not to, he will ignore the order.

The deed may specify that if the monument is not treated in accordance with the deed the piece of land reverts to the family. If so, the governor will probably let that happen.

Generally, another legislature and Governor can undo what an earler legislature and Governor did.

At least the legislature will, hopefully, have to vote.

People should take some time to read Lee’s biography.
His record at West Point
His service in the Mexican American war
His character and experience which caused him to be offered the leadership of the Union and Confederate armies
The importance of states rights in 1860 thought
His instructions to his troops at Appomattox
His friendship with Grant
His service as President of Washington College
His efforts at reconciliation after the war.
Then look in the mirror and see how you measure up!
