San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, 71, says hes embarrassed as a white person that a white man could allegedly murder a black man, referencing George Floyd, and suggesting such lynchings are commonplace in 2020 America.
In a strange, counterintuitive sort of way, the best teaching moment of this recent tragedy, I think, was the look on the officers face, Popovich said in a video posted by the Spurs, according to The Associated Press. For white people to see how nonchalant, how casual, just how everyday-going-about-his job, so much so that he could just put his left hand in his pocket, wriggle his knee around a little bit to teach this person some sort of a lesson and that it was his right and his duty to do it, in his mind.
I think Im just embarrassed as a white person to know that that can happen, he continued. To actually watch a lynching. Weve all seen books, and you look in the books and you see black people hanging off of trees. But we just saw it again. I never thought Id see that, with my own eyes, in real time.
Floyd died last week after a police officer had his knee on the 46-year-olds neck for over eight minutes during an arrest, as shown in viral video footage. That officer has been charged with second-degree murder.
Its like the neighborhood where you know theres a dangerous corner, and you know that somethings going to happen someday, and nobody does anything, Popovich said. And then a young kid gets killed and a stop sign goes up. Well, without getting too political, weve got a lot of stop signs that need to go up quickly because our country is in trouble. And the basic reason is race.
The NBA coach then told white people that its on us to call out racism.
We have to do it, he said. Black people have been shouldering this burden for 400 years. The only reason this nation has made the progress it has is because of the persistence, patience, and effort of black people. The history of our nation from the very beginning in many ways was a lie, and we continue to this day, mostly black and brown people, to try to make that lie a truth so that it is no longer a lie. And those rights and privileges are enjoyed by people of color, just like we enjoy them. So its got to be us, in my opinion, that speaks truth to power, and call it out, no matter what the consequences. We have to speak. We have to not let anything go.
During the highly political video, Popovich ironically suggested he doesnt want to get too political as he linked alleged unchecked systemic racism to the lack of anti-gun legislation.
No! what is being described is this man:
who had had his chain jerked once too often that day by a flawed man with an addiction and rap sheet....this man is now insane. The perfect storm of human frailties.
At 71 years old Mr. Popovich sounds worried that he’s going to be put out to pasture and has nothing to do with his time in retirement.
But he's not embarrassed that black people kill other black people every day?
I say he/she/it/tranny(?) should apologize that he/it only rose to his/its position by being white. And, that if he/it were a black man/it he/it would never have attained all the riches he/it certainly has. Therefore, to prove his/its sincerity that he/it really and truly wants forgiveness he/it should give away all property and money to the BLM movement.
Otherwise he/it is just a slimy puke trying to do a sick PR stunt.
Come on Poppy, show us the way.
Douche! I dont watch so I cant boycott
You are an embarrassment to America.
Resign your coaching job and give it to a black man, donate all your millions to BLM, then just go away.
And I’m embarrassed he’s one too.
Norman Rockwell. This one has been “relegated” into the depths of the PC basement, never to be seen again. Oh, how that one does leave a mark!!!
Then OFF yourself, Pepperoni pizza face
I am not embarrassed about anything. My Irish ancestors were treated badly for a time in both the old and new world. My Slavic ancestors started in rural New York with a cheap shack with only three rooms and a garage and 4 children and a married couple back in the 1950s. They worked their way up. And guess what my secret to being more successful than many black people is? The big decisions I made were keeping my pants zipped for everyone but my wife and also refraining from serious drug use, along with being limited to an occasional beer when it came to alcohol consumption.
Hey Popovich
Whats your take on Kori Ali Muhammad?
WRONG!!!!! First of all, it wasn't a mob, it was a psycho cop.
And second, the last one of those occurred in Mississippi in 2018.
And you should be no matter what your race is....
And Im embarrassed as a former NBA fan...that hes a coach.
White people have lost their damn minds.
I will never be embarrassed for my race, ethnicity, heritage, success.
I will never kneel for anything but my God. What’s happening in this Country is disgraceful.
So he’s saying all White people are responsible for what that police officer did. Would he apply to principle to any other race? Of course, we know the answer.
