Many times since 1783 the US has made it clear we will treat you right in our country if you visit as long as you stay within the limits of our laws. These laws are our business and it is the way we live. We expect you to respect them or don’t come in.

In an article from the Chicago Tribune dated September 9, 1991:

Foreign Ministry spokesman Wu Jianmin said Thursday that the commemoration ceremony for slain pro-democracy protesters staged Wednesday by Reps. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Ben Jones (D-Ga.) and John Miller (R-Wash.)
violated the law.

The three are part of a nine-member human rights delegation lobbying China to grant amnesty for jailed dissidents. The delegation left Beijing Thursday.

Dignified people like the Congress members hid from their hosts and went to Tiananmen Square to carry out illegal activities in violation of the relevent regulations of the Beijing municipal government,’’ Wu said.
