The Morning Briefing: Who In the Heck Even Voted for Bill de Blasio?

De Blasio Probably Doesn’t Even Like de Blasio

After a couple of conversations with comedian friends of mine from New York this week I am more mystified than ever as to how Bill de Blasio got re-elected. One of my friends is conservative, the other liberal, and both hate de Blasio with a white-hot passion.

When Mayor Moron was first elected almost everyone I know who is well-versed in New York City politics was convinced that he would be a one-term wonder. As he went about dismantling twenty years of progress in the city it seemed almost certain that he would be shown the door, Apparently, everyone in New York was drunk in 2017, and de Blasio was given another shot at screwing everything up.

That, of course, proved to be rather fateful once coronavirus rolled into town. New York City was the ground-zero launching point for the spread of the virus. The one-two incompetence punch of Andrew Cuomo and Bill de Blasio unleashed the hell we have all been living through since March.

Pandemic de Blasio was was awful, riot de Blasio is even worse.

20 straight years of Republican rule in New York. 8 for Giuliani and 12 for Bloomberg, albeit Bloomberg was a RINO and run his last 4 years as an independent. He still managed to bring the Republican convention to New York City in 2004 by paying for a lot if it.

Flanagan’s seat contained a little Suburban territory, Franklin Park, not to mention Chi enclave Norridge. He was the last time we had a seat with any major Chi territory. Henry Hyde had O’Hare I guess so we still had technical Chi territory until that seat was redrawn. https://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=22301

Tim Sheehan (defeated by Roman P in 1958)’s seat had Chi Enclave Harwood Heights and part of Norridge. https://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=264530

So we’d have to go further back for a Chi ONLY GOP Seat. Looks like Edgar A. Jonas (49-54)’s seat was a small Northside district, hugging the border with Evanston and Lincolnwood but not crossing it!!!!! #12. Progenitor to the modern 9th. https://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=264248

Well, we don’t have a Staten Island. Staten Island is basically a GOP suburb in NJ that just happens to be part of NYC for some reason. They need to secede with the fury of a 100000 John C. Calhouns.

City Council #s in NY are pretty pathetic now aren’t they?

I figure Rudy will be the last real GOP Mayor (Dafuq was the last one before him? Not RINOs Linseed and LaGuardia) ever and I don’t even know about a Bloomberg at this point. That DeBlasio won a 2nd landslide.....

I doubt he’s the nominee again to give us (or “us”) a chance.

But yeah there WILL be a real GOP nominee at least. We’ve no GOP here in Chi since the non-partisan elections and our last one was Ray Wardingley in 1995 (weren’t you involved with one of his Congressional bids?) who got a mere 2.77% with most Republicans voting for Daley against Indie Candidate Roland Burris. Similar story in 1991, Daley vs. Harold Washington Party. AND again 1989 (special) when Ed Vrdolyak was our nominee.

In 87 of course Vrdolyak ran under the banner of Illinois Solidarity (Adali Stevenson vehicle after a LaRousie won the primary for LT Governor in 1986 and he refused to share a ticket with him) and got most of the GOP vote.

So yeah Bernie Epton in 83 was our last nominee to crack 5% AND our last nominee to crack 45%. How about that bit of trivia.

The last GOP nominee in a “normal” election where most the White dem vote wasn’t going to us and most our vote wasn’t going to Daley or Vrdolyak was 1977 where our dude (a banker and former Transit board member so a passable 2nd tierish candidate) got 16%.

For reference Trump got 12% in Chicago.

Thank you for the correction and the history. Good stuff.

But I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that the fact that a portion of O’Hare (with no voters) lies within the boundaries of DuPage County while legally being part of the City of Chicago should not be sufficient to deem Henry Hyde’s district to be partly “in Chicago.”
