Not the first time that’s happened. In the 1992 LA Riots, Hispanic gang members, many heavily armed, defended several grocery stores from rioters and looters.

One was famously interviewed by the LA Times; he stated that his elderly grandmother used that store, that she couldn’t go anywhere else and that this was why he and his friends were there. IIRC, with their help nobody looted the place.

I remember that interview I lived not too far away and had many family members that lived in the LA area. It was a good news interview.
