I used to have shotguns propped in corners loaded and safeties on. Then I learned that most shotguns don’t have the “drop safety” mechanisms most handguns have.
They now sit with the barrel empty, full magazine, the slide (pumps) partway open, safety off, and a sleeve with 5 extra shells on the butt.
It is ready about 5 seconds after I grab it (and with a full mag taking a shell from the sleeve) as I walk out to see what just went bump in the night.

I was thinking of those bags of dyes that explode when banks are robbed or safes/stores or broken into...
Between a video camera and being covered in that type of dye even on the skin, it’d be fairly easy to spot someone who stands out from the crowd. I mean, I would really want to mark those scumbags with as much coloring as possible.

If I lived in gun free New York, I would see a lawyer about the legality of owning a clone civil war era black powder pistol. It is only 6 shots and you have to pack each cyclinder by hand, but it would be better than nothing. In many places, a black powder pistol is considered a firearm “accessory” and not a firearm itself. In a crunch like this, it is a lot better than defending your business with a 2-x-4 and getting beaten with it. One shot from a smoke belching black powder gun should scatter the rats back to their hidey holes.
One shot was *not* enough to run off a mob in my experience back in LA in 1992.
I like slow enough to thoughtfully place each shot, but no slower. Pump is pretty close to that standard. If my Remington 870 is too slow, I waited too long for my first shot.
