George Floyd died Monday from a combination of preexisting health conditions exacerbated by being held down by Minneapolis officers, not from strangulation or asphyxiation, based on the medical examiners initial report.
Preliminary findings from a Tuesday autopsy conducted by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner found no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxiation or strangulation, according to the criminal complaint filed Friday against former officer Derek Michael Chauvin.
Mr. Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease, said the complaint from the Hennepin County Attorney. The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.
The Minneapolis police officer fired earlier this week was charged Friday with third-degree murder and manslaughter after kneeling on Mr. Floyds neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Video showed he was unresponsive for the last 2 minutes and 53 seconds.
Police are trained that this type of restraint with a subject in a prone position is inherently dangerous, the complaint said.
According to the filing, officers confronted Mr. Floyd after receiving a 911 call saying that he had paid for merchandise at Cup Foods with a phony $20 bill. They found him nearby in his vehicle with an adult male and female.
Mr. Floyd, who was six feet tall and weighed over 200 pounds, was handcuffed and led to the squad car, but resisted getting inside, saying he was claustrophobic.
While standing, he said repeatedly he couldnt breathe. Mr. Floyd struggled as officers tried to force him into the car and fell to the ground. Two officers held him down while Officer Chauvin pressed his knee on the suspects neck.
Mr. Floyd said I cant breathe multiple times, as well as

"I just dont care. I dont care if they did kill him with unnecessary force. I just dont care. I am sick of black people fighting with the police and then hollering racism and I just dont care anymore if the cops kill them. I am sick of them and sick of their crap, and I just dont care anymore. To heck with them. One less POS on the street."
"Traumatic asphyxia, or Perthes's syndrome, is a medical emergency caused by an intense compression of the thoracic cavity, causing venous back-flow from the right side of the heart into the veins of the neck and the brain."
Not the same as a knee on the neck compressing the carotid.
Man calm down! What the hell is wrong with you? Aren’t you capable of back and forth discussion? You’re the type that just want to get your gun and shoot someone. I honestly have no idea why medical was called, I simply said they were called early in the encounter.
I ditto your assessment. He was not suffocated and it is clear to me that no one can speak they are NOT getting air.
If I was arrested for any reason, it would not escalate to require 4 cops and one of them kneeling on my neck to subdue me. Maybe Officer Chauvin has witnessed an associate having his thumb bit off ? Kneeling on the neck is an excellent technique to prevent thumb chomping. Think the riots are bad now ? wait till Officer Chauvin is reinstated back on the force cause he “dindu nuffin” wrong.
And that would be my position regardless of any "instructions" that the judge might have given me and my fellow jurors.
The cop needs to do time...and I'm not talking 3 months. But he doesn't deserve 20 years in light of this autopsy report.
He was drunk or on something according to the shops employee who called 911 on him.
In the video I have seen where he is walked across the street to a patrol car he is a bit wobbly and does stumble a little before he is put into a patrol car.
Do not know how he got out of the car onto the ground on the opposite side of the patrol car in which he was seated that part of the video I saw was not shown.
You can speculate if you want. I will wait for the toxicology report so I know the facts.
You have the facts. A handcuffed prisoner died after excessive force was applied and the police refused to render aid for several minutes. Grasp straws all you want in defense of these dirty cops. Those basic facts won’t be changing.
I wouldn’t say he’s “innocent”. This is not an approved use of force. But he won’t be convicted of 3rd degree murder.
I didn’t know that about the proper use of force...
good to know.
Absolutely true! I am not wasting one minute lamenting George Floyd’s death. But that is different than discussing WHY he died, and whether the poor cop was guilty of murdering him by strangulation like sooo many of you here thought.
I told you that story did not add up.
I think you’re wrong, read the charging documents. You can’t suffocate someone by only applying pressure to the back of the neck. Plus people that are being deprived of air, can’t speak. He had his hands behind his back so he was not laying on top of them and possibly contributing to positional asphyxiation. He should have had a nice unobstructed airway the way he was lying. I know because I sleep in that position every night for maximum air. But he might have had a heart attack and that’s why he couldn’t breathe.
This is sophistry under the most intense political pressure in order to keep the city from massive payouts, and to keep from ruining Amy Klobuchars VP chances.
Not really. The city is guaranteed to be giving massive pay outs as a penance. That’s standard in these cases in Democrat locales.
“excessive force was applied”
You don’t know that. America has failed to teach the difference between opinion and fact.
The dumbing down of America on display. It’s why we have courts instead of mob rule because none of us are as stupid as all of us.
So in other words you want to guess what caused his death instead of waiting for facts.
And in case you are new to this story an ambulance had been called and they were waiting for it.
I will actually wait for all the facts to be known before I call for the cops to swing.
I cannot fathom any reason for the cops to kneel on someone’s neck like that.
LE is out of control and potential candidates need to be screened better and put on a long probationary period to try to weed out the bad apples.
When I see the cops giving CPR to someone who was shot and killed and they have done this sort of thing, it just doesn’t make any sense.
“What does potential mean? Either they found intoxicants or not.”
it means they’re waiting for lab results ...
“My guess is that potential intoxicants was an inartful way for the ME to say that Mr. Floyds reported behavior suggested that he was intox”
Yes. It struck me as quite “inartful”. Seeming to expect a finding or conclusion.
[I read the family of the victim wants to retain their own autopsy expert. They’re NOT happy with the 3rd degree murder charge. They want FIRST degree!
This ain’t over by a long shot !

But you can bet these Democrats will pay whatever amount necessary to quiet the relatives down, and stop harshing their political mellow. And that is all these long-lost kin are basically after - a payday from the dead felon they hoped never to see again in their lifetimes, anyway. There was a time when Mad Magazine would have satirized this endlessly. Unfortunate, when we need this kind of humor most, it’s sadly no longer with us.
A NEGLIGENCE conviction, AT BEST.
George apparently made decisions that day that led to his being in that position. He is responsible for his own death.
A NEGLIGENCE conviction, AT BEST.
