Trump Is Offering to Mediate in the India-China Border Dispute. Here's What to Know About the Escalating Tensions
TIME via MSN ^ | 05/27/2020 | Billy Perrigo

As precursors to possible nuclear war go, fistfights and stone throwing aren’t exactly the first things that come to mind.

But along India and China’s long, contested border, that’s exactly what has been happening for the past month, prompting President Trump on Wednesday to offer to mediate what he called a “now raging dispute” between Asia’s two major military powers.

Tensions along the 2,000 mile stretch have been high for decades, with the Indian government reporting more than 1,000 mostly minor incursions by Chinese troops between 2016-18. But hostilities have increased over the last several weeks following large Chinese troop movements into previously Indian-controlled territory.

Here’s what to know about the rising tensions between the world’s two most populous countries.

What’s happening at the India-China border now?

Up to 10,000 Chinese troops, equipped with vehicles and tents, are reportedly stationed in Ladakh, close to where India, China and Pakistan meet, having crossed the “line of actual control” between the two nations in early May. In the last few weeks, there have been two clashes, one on May 5, in Ladakh, and another on May 9, more than 1,000 miles away, close to India’s eastern border with China and Bhutan.

Both sides appear to have so far kept to an informal agreement where weapons aren’t used in clashes, designed to prevent escalation. But several soldiers from both sides have been injured, including senior officers, according to reports, though none have died.

Tensions increased further on Tuesday, with satellite photos published by Indian station NDTV purportedly showing Chinese building an expansion to a nearby air base, and fighter jets on the tarmac. On the same day, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the country was stepping up its preparedness for military conflict—though it’s unclear whether this was a reference to India

Literally not a single sentence in the story supports the headline, which I know you just copied faithfully from the original.

RE: Literally not a single sentence in the story supports the headline,

What about this sentence in the story:

But along India and China’s long, contested border, that’s exactly what has been happening for the past month, prompting President Trump on Wednesday to offer to mediate what he called a “now raging dispute” between Asia’s two major military powers.

Let China and India fight it out. Their combined population is 8 times bigger than USA. A few million killed would not even make a dent. Might actually improve over-crowding which is horrible in cities of both.

China is spreading themselves pretty thin right now.
- A dustup with the USA,
- (with South Korea and Japan, and Taiwan with skin in the game).
- Friction with India.
- Hong Kong is trouble.
- Rubbing Australia and Indonesia the wrong way.
- Vietnam is always itching for a fight with them
- Even the Euroweenies are displeased with them.

Are they really able to keep all of these balls in the air?

TRUMP's TWEET

“We have informed both India and China that the United States is ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute. Thank you!” he tweeted.

Teddy Roosevelt got a Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating peace between Russia and Japan. Obama got one for opening the right box of Cracker Jack. Maybe President Trump could get one too.

There is NO SOLUTION possible when 2 countries claim ownership of some land area. That Ladakh region in dispute is a desolate frozen piece of shxt. But ego will not allow either country to accept defeat.

If Mexico claims ownership of part of CA, will Americans negotiate partitioning CA? Nope, Nada, Never, Nein, Negative.

Ok, but that sentence doesn’t appear in the article.

I would be shocked if either government took Pres, Trump up on this.

Oops, now I see that’s the very first sentence in the article. 🙄

But still, the rest of the article ( I hope 🙂) doesn’t elaborate on that point, so I’m not sure that should be the headline. In addition, to repeat, no way will either government take our president up on his offer,

How about Mexico return Baja to Las Californias - I bet if there was a vote the residents of Baja would prefer to be American.

People float the idea of using nukes like they’re playing a computer game, where you simply restart the game once your character is killed. In real life, it’s very unlikely. The US has floated the use of nukes probably a dozen times since they were invented. It has used them precisely twice.

Nukes are never an option against a nuclear power with 2nd strike capability. The logic of nuclear weapons use dictates that any strike be an all-out attack to destroy the enemy’s command and control as well as its 2nd strike capabilities. That means cities and rocket bases. If you are going to kill millions of the enemy, you’d better kill them all. Because nuclear retaliation is guaranteed if you fail.

If India does a first strike, it needs to ensure that China’s SLBM’s are taken care of. That means its short-legged Kilo subs need to know where China’s SLBM-carrying subs are, and take them out before Beijing can get in touch with those subs with targeting information. Bottom line is that even if Modi kills a few hundred million Chinese, he risks tens of millions of Indian dead. Seems like a huge price to pay for a parcel of uninhabitable wasteland.

It will never be an option even in the event of conventional defeat. Losing land vs being made extinct? The choice is easy. Whereas any country that launches nukes against a nuclear power in possession of at least hundreds of nukes can expect to have its major cities and their inhabitants cremated. Nuclear doctrine is written to deter. When nuclear deterrence (to conventional invasion) fails, I expect committing suicide by initiating a first strike is a much tougher decision than the dry-as-dust documents would suggest.

Hitler tried to pull the temple down around him. I doubt any other leader, democratic or otherwise, would. Hitler wasn’t right in the head.

Trump is a very active, workaholic kind of guy, and it may not be widely known, but Trump also possesses formidable skills in the art of meditating, as can be ascertained here...

What pisses Pakistan off is majority Muslim state of Kashmir is still part of India. You may know Pakistan was formed in 1947 by dividing then existing India into 2 countries. Pakistan landmass was strictly on Muslim population majority in the area, and Pakistan has official religion..ISLAM.
while what remained as India adopted no state religion.

What we should be doing is making sure that any conflict between the two does not spill over to the US. Aside from that, let both of a knock each other into the stone ages, which probably is not that far for some of them, they could kill off 90% of their populations and still be overpopulated. Hey, let’s send home all the Chinese and Indian visa workers in the US, so they can get in on the action.
