Five Quick Things: Let That Mask Slip
The American Spectator ^ | 25 May 20 | Scott McKay

Posted on 05/25/2020 5:58:19 AM PDT by SkyPilot

That mask isn't virtuous, nor is it going to keep you from catching the virus. Plus, various other things.

It’s time to say a few things which need to be said — and to irritate some people who need to be irritated (as they are surely irritating).

And on with the show…

1. Enough with the Mask-Nazi nonsense.

Those of us who refuse to live our lives in fear, or to bow to those who do, have a message for the rest of you — the time has come and gone for us to continue with this idiotic charade of wearing masks in public.

The mask is not an adequate defense against the COVID-19 virus, gang. The virus checks in at somewhere between 0.06 and 0.14 microns, meaning it’s too small for any commercially available mask to effectively filter it out. The pores on an N95 mask, which are the best masks you’re reasonably going to find, and the vast, vast majority of you are not going to have N95 masks but rather cloth masks which perform far less well, are 0.3 microns.

Meaning that while the N95 mask you wish you had but don’t, and that you shouldn’t have because doctors and nurses who have to treat coronavirus patients daily in hospitals need a steady supply of them, might trap the virus most of the time, that crappy cloth mask you’re wearing is more or less worthless. All it’s doing is signaling to people that you think you care more about the virus than they do.

But if you really want to wear that mask, OK. Go ahead and wear it. It’s time to stop giving the stink-eye, or worse, a piece of your Karen mind, to people who aren’t impressed with your Mask Virtue...

From what I’ve heard, it’s less transmissible from surfaces than originally thought. That means I don’t have to do a disinfectant OCD dance each time I get the mail, but I still shower and take other precautions after buying groceries, since the stores are quite peopley.

Wrong. Why?? Because we are not talking about the need to filter “virus particles”. Bare virus particles simply don’t exist in the particulate emissions from sneezes, coughts, speech, or breathing. Those emissions are basically water drops with various concentrations of salt and other chemicals from the human system, and far larger than the quoted 0.14 micron size quoted.

The author is also wrong because he fails to account for "Brownian motion." In short, Brownian motion is the erratic, random motion of particles smaller than .3 microns that occurs when they collide with molecules while suspended in a fluid or gas. In other words, while the Wuhan flu virus would pass through an N95 mask if the virus were to travel in a straight line, because of Brownian motion, the virus snags itself in the mesh rather than passing through.

and just think, only a few months ago, when if you walked into a place of business wearing a mask, you would be asked to leave or they would call the police.

It doesn’t look weak, more like a sheep.

Well, I guess if someone thinks I look like a sheep I must be one...

Dear Mr. McKay, you don’t know jack. I pair my mask with a personal ion generator and achieve nearly 100% filtering efficiency. I’ve been doing this for over four years to avoid the flu because I refuse to take flu shots which stimulate my B cells and cause cancer relapse. Frankly if you had what I’ve been going through for the past ten years with your stupid ideas, I’m confident that you would be a rotting corpse by now.

But you see clearly that is NOT how the general public understood that.

General public now thinks you can’t get it from surfaces...

Which was the whole point of that headline.

Exactly. Like ... normal. Pre-WuFlu we’ve been careful like that — unpack our bags and then wash our hands.

According to Dr. Blaylock, there have been no studies conducted to establish that either a cloth mask or the N95 mask has an impact on the transmission of the coronavirus.

Beware of Blaylock. In my opinion he's a dishonest crank.

He argues there are no studies proving masks protect against the flu.

Why flu when we're talking about Covid-19? He says

"no studies have been done to demonstrate that either a cloth mask or the N95 mask has any effect on transmission of the COVID-19 virus. Any recommendations, therefore, have to be based on studies of influenza virus transmission."

But the review of literature that he cites for his core argument also says:

"Eight of nine retrospective observational studies found that mask and/or respirator use was independently associated with a reduced risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)."

Covid-19 is caused by a SARS virus.

See that? He fails to tell his readers that multiple studies show masks are effective against SARS viruses and instead focuses on influenza.

Why? Not because he's an honest researcher but because it gives him the answer he wants.

Up here in Alberta, it’s known the masks don’t save you from anything, but people are free to go on being little obedient compliant lapdogs.

Yes, active virus can be picked up from surfaces. It works like this, in part.

Virus without moisture around it will dry out and very quickly become inactive. Virus with human bodily fluid around it will be active longer.

And then there’s the size of a viral load. Less is better.

Imagine thinking that volunteering to be a disease vector is an act of bravery.

Up here in Alberta, it’s known the masks don’t save you from anything, but people are free to go on being little obedient compliant lapdogs.

Well, now I don't have to imagine it.

Good stuff! Might I trouble you for a link to that if you have it? Google doesn't find it.

Hong Kongers have worn them for over a year.

If you live in an area where you are literally living, traveling, walking shoulder to shoulder among millions I can see a masks usefullness. The chance of having someone within touching distance coughing or sneezing or physically touching/brushing against you are very good.

I live in a rural area with the largest town of 40k within driving distance and have always followed just keeping away from other folks personal space. I don't see the need for a mask and couldn't wear one more than 60 seconds if I had to. Since all the kids were grown and gone I haven't gotten a bad virus in years. Just showing that shoving 30-40 runny nosed urchins into close proximity to pass a virus around and bring it home is a prime vector even in sparsely populated areas. For those stuck in high population areas with mass transit or forced or have a habit of living shoved up against each other, they need every tool they can get to not pass crud around.

Vitamin D and Vitamin C are your friends. If you like and are quite concerned, then take the drugs that Trump recommends as well as many doctors. You can do that as a precaution too. Overall, this disease has a very low morality rate yet we’ve killed our economies over this and driven in social wedges.

This is just another step toward an authoritarian state.

Go ahead and keep your opinions though. Just know it’s based on fear and not fact.
