Barbers gathered outside the Michigan state capitol this week to give free haircuts in defiance of the state’s stay-at-home restrictions.

Nearly 400 people attended the demonstration on Wednesday. “Operation Haircut” was organized by the Michigan Conservative Coalition.

Protesters have accused Governor Gretchen Whitmer of “killing small businesses” and called the restrictions overbearing.

According to Michigan state police, at least three of the barbers were given citations for disorderly conduct.

It takes MANY hours to get a license to cut here in MA.
Ridiculous.
Another covid silver lining for a revolt.

“So I spent five ghastly years at the Hairdressers’ Training Centre at Totnes. Can you imagine what it’s like cutting the same head for five years? I didn’t want to be a barber anyway. I wanted to be a .....”

Oh, you know the thing.

Another reason they do it is to artificially limit competition.

I just paid $165 for a haircut. Well, not really. After eight weeks, I was desperate and finally searched the internet for a pair of electric hair trimmers. Virtually every website offering the WAHL clippers was out of stock and I finally had to purchase the most expensive pair they offer thru a barber supply company.

Anyway, I gave myself a buzz cut and it actually came out good except for the fact that I didn't know how to keep the top and the front longer than the sides.......oh well.

Practice makes perfect and ball caps hide the screw ups........LOL!

Yep. Get control, then they can grant favors to political cronies (including unions).

I agree. It's too bad today's pretty young ladies destroy their ‘pretty’ with trash tags and self mutilation?

What's next? Some shaggy headed Bhuddist monk in his saffron robes walking up the Michigan state house, sitting in the lotus position on the stairs and then shaving his own head in protest?

Your permit fees pay for the pensions of the crooks with their boot on your neck.

Next question!”

Damn good answer!

They do not just lose their licenses. They get their power and water shut off, too. They will have to go back to hand powered or battery powered clippers and bottled water.

From the article:

“According to Michigan state police, at least three of the barbers were given citations for disorderly conduct.”

What kind of person would you have to be to give a hair dresser a ticket and then not feel total embarrassment and shame?

why do you need a license to cut hair?

One of the things the licensing classes focus on is what to do if you have a customer with lice. Health issue.

“Why do you need a license to cut hair?”

There was a state legislator in Texas (I want to say it was Eddie Bernice Johnson) who claimed cosmetology licenses are necessary because they can detect venereal diseases in your scalp...

I cut my boys hair for a long time....well until my ex finally rescued them and brought them to his barber.

My garden buddy needs a haircut so bad...his mom won't do it.

I cut my own hair with a ten dollar clipper. I have not paid for a haircut in fifty years. Takes me less than ten minutes. I just zip up the sides and back with no attachment and trim the few remaining strands on top with scissors.

I cant claim to know the justification in every state. The justification government claims here is that there is no such thing as a “hair cutter”. While modern barbers don’t do surgery, present day “cosmetologists” do work with blades and chemicals. Supposedly it is within the realm of possibility, small chance but theoretically possible, for someone to get badly cut or seriously burned by the treatments and having someone trained makes it all safer.

I agree with you that a “hair cutter” probably shouldn’t need a license. At the same time though, those using other processes, like formaldehyde generating “Brazillians” or high concentration peroxide bleaches, should probably have some idea of what they are doing.

(Peroxide: I, not a hair dresser, was once horsing around with some highly concentrated peroxide. I wasn’t wearing gloves and I accidentally spilled a bunch on the back of my left hand and it ran down my fingers. It foamed like one might expect if it had been put on a wound and stung as it ran down. I reflexively shook my hand but none of it came off. I immediately went to wash it off but the “foam” wouldn’t come off, the portion of my hand it had run down was burned into something like a flexible porkie rind.)
