The number of children born in the United States has hit its lowest level in 35 years, according to new federal data, as demographers worry that a baby bust that emerged after the Great Recession is becoming permanent.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report Wednesday that 3.7 million children were born in the U.S. last year, down 1 percent from 2018 and the lowest total number of births since 1985.
Birth rates dropped among women of virtually every age and race group, though they rose among women in their early 40s, the CDC found. Birth rates among teenagers dropped substantially, hitting record lows. The rate of teenagers giving birth has dropped by a whopping 60 percent since 2007, and by 73 percent since 1991.
Since the recession, the birth rate has risen year-over-year only once, in 2014. Now, demographers tracking the declining birth rate say the trend is beginning to look like a longer-term pattern.
"The fact that births and fertility continued to decline in 2019 despite the booming economy suggests that this is a permanent shift to a lower fertility regime in the U.S.," said Cheryl Russell, a demographer and contributing editor to the journal American Demographics.

Five here. Doing my part!
I do see these stats as a reflection of an overall downgrade in our nation.
But as others have said, in general lower teen birth rates as long as they arent due to abortions are generally good. Nothing wrong with a married teen having a baby.
Finally I bet the conservative evangelicals have a way higher birth rate. We may be seeing liberals and areligious declining but if the conservative evangelicals are up then I see hope for the future.
Something about a rebound of people getting married and starting families after escaping the solitary confinement of house arrest...
We have a shortage of TP, not people.
The Lord Provides...have faith
Some folks just can’t buy into faith like that. I never doubted myself that if I tried hard enough, I’d be able to house/clothe/feed my kids.
When they hit elementary school I repeated one thing to them rather often. “If you wanna go to college, you’ll need to get straight A’s and work very hard at it. Daddy never went to college and doesn’t believe in that liberal crap. So if you wanna go, it’s on your dime”
My oldest runs a very successful small business at 22 yrs old she started, now 28, makes 150-200k selling reptiles.
I think my 3rd kid will wanna go to School, and she’s my only liberal child...the others are all red wing conservatives of the highest order.
“This is what happens when a nation adopts abortion, homosexuality and Globalism as its main principles.”
Well then, what was the cause of the low birth rate in 1985?
No illegals coming here to birth their kids. The wall is working.
By year 1969 was the lowest birth rate in the latter half of the 20th century
They were closing schools left and right when I was growing up
There were a few weddings during “lock down”.
The Abortion Rate is at the lowest in 50 years.
Therefore, there must be other factors that are leading to the lower birth rate.
Yes father of four you are correct theres very very few families with more - than two around my neighborhood
I happen to have three , one from a previous, but I can only count on one hand families that have more than two I do feel sorry for the only kids I dont think you want to have just one
The Fuhrer’s have decreed a 6-ft social distancing order. Not conducive for increasing the birth rate.
Makes sense. No bars. No drunks. No one night stands.
wait ten months from now
Oh. Right.
For those already in groups that stayed together during the recommendations period, the result could be the opposite, and lots of jokes about that. And that’s a familiar situation.
But for those forced into solitary for months, it could very well happen that they will want to form solid relationships in the future.
My local assemblyperson is vehemently against solitary in prison, especially for young men. He says it turns their brains into hamburger.
Well, I have mental resources etc. so I’m not afraid of that. But it has been a big eye opener to how much we really NEED social contact. We’ve been social animals for too many millions of years to go solitary for very long.
Don’t forget the anti-father culture in the western hemisphere. The courts are completely opposed to fathers as are all gov’t agencies and the media.
I tell my kids that a life without children is a shallow existence, meaningless.
The nation has always needed immigrants to support the expansion of the economy.
This is nothing new.
I have to laugh at all of the people getting worked up over immigration of people who WANT to work. There are plenty of skilled job openings for all of the Americans to work—and then millions of openings left over.
Americans don’t want to work in low skill, low pay jobs. Americans are not trained in a lot of the “skilled” jobs that are open.
Who else is going to do them?
Illegal immigrants who just want to suck of the teats? I am all for sending them back where they came from. Good, hard working immigrants willing to come here and help expand the greatness of the USA? I welcome them with open arms.
Couples for whom creating a joyful, loving, God-centered family is a priority tend to have more children.
The children from those families tend to carry on that tradition.
That’s an outdated concept in today’s self-indulgent, nihilistic culture, but it’s a beautiful environment in which people can truly thrive.
