The House of Representatives on Friday passed a historic piece of legislation , allowing members to vote by proxy and conduct hearings remotely for the next 45 days because of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. Under the new rules, which passed mostly along party lines, congressmen and women can give written instructions to another member in the chamber to vote on their behalf. One representative can serve as a proxy voter for up to 10 other members at any given time. Those who choose to work remotely can still participate in open hearings and cast committee votes. Closed hearings, however, will still be held in-person on Capitol Hill.
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) sounded the alarm on the rules change during a "Hannity" special on Fox News Friday night. According to Scalise, not only is the move unconstitutional, but it puts members who represent swing districts in a bind.
You know, the thing is it gives Nancy Pelosi power, but imagine being a Democrat who goes back home in a swing district. You just voted to give your voting card in Congress to Nancy Pelosi, and she doesn't represent the values of a lot of those districts. You know, you now signed on for San Francisco values, and by the way, what are you doing now? Why are you collecting a paycheck if you want Nancy Pelosi to be the one to vote for you and represent your district, and you're representing a swing state somewhere else? And so, this could be a tough vote for those people to explain," Scalise explained. "It's unconstitutional, first of all, because a quorum under this resolution they just passed 20 people on the floor 20 Democrats can constitute a quorum of the House of Representatives, 435 people. That goes against Article One of the Constitution. They don't seem to care about any of that, they just want to consolidate power and spend money. I mean, a drunken sailor would be offended to be compared to them and what they did with this bill. Money to illegals, taxpayer funding of abortion, this is crazy.
Scalise believes the House should be in session and working on behalf of the American people, just as the Senate is doing. Out of the 435 members in the House, the minority whip said about 24 people were unable to be in attendance.
"To suggest that it's complicated to get here is just fallacy. So, why [Pelosi] did this, it's about a power grab. It surely has nothing to do with health and safety ..." he explained.
The minority whip cited the number of states that are reopening their economy, including restaurants and houses of worship, as a prime example of why the proxy voting move is a power grab.
"We could finally go back into places of worship, and yet she's going to say that she doesn't want Congress to be meeting in Washington debating bills. She just would rather just take your proxy vote and hold on to it so that she can vote for you," Scalise said of Pelosi. "I'll tell you this, and of course Jason, you would have never done this either. Nancy Pelosi is not going to get my vote, she surely would not have gotten yours."
Scalise's message for those who voted in favor of the bill is simple: resign.
"But for any of those folks that voted for this bill today, how do they go back home and explain today they voted to allow Nancy Pelosi to vote for them so that they don't have to go to work anymore?" he asked. "Well, then why don't they just resign their seat and send somebody up here who wants to come and fight for restoring the American dream up here in Washington?

We must defend the second amendment at all costs. Some days I think it’s the only thing keep us from total tyranny.
Also not surprising. In fact, the one thing you can consistently count on is Republican timidity and weakness in the face of power grabs.
Term limits isn’t a panacea. California implemented them in the ‘90s. For about 5 minutes, the GOP got control of the Assembly, and then in 1996, they lost it and the state has peddled to the left of Stalin and Mao ever since.
You’ve got to get rid of the Derp State people backing these revolving door of leftist despots. The armies of bureaucrats employed forever and serving the cause of tyranny. The gubmint union employees that have sucked the state dry.
Yeah, as K.T. MCFarland said, these permanent fixtures just sit around and say to themselves about any administration, “I was here before you came, and after you leave I’ll still be here.” And they know it’s the truth. So frustrating.
I’ve advocated for some time going back to the patronage system. Civil service has only created armies and armies of leftist elites rotting the entire government from within like termites. Bring in your own people at the start of an administration all the way down to janitor, and out they go in 4 or 8 years. No pensions and all that other crap.
Going to work for the government meant a temporary sacrifice for yourself. Now people go there to get rich, permanent benefits and enact a radical agenda and to be permanently insulated from the ups and downs of the economic cycle. This is so far removed from what the Founders wanted. It’s a tyranny that a revolution should’ve been fought over to remove. Trillions of dollars all over this insanity.
Well put.
Govt workers used to sacrifice higher pay for golden benefits and job security, now they have all 3 in an incredibly bloated giant parasite.
DOJ alone > 100K employees. Seriously?
Agreed. This could not possibly be constitutional. If the critters want to do remote voting from their states, I think that would be okay...but just handing over your vote to the party boss aint gonna fly.
The problem is that theyre scared to stay in their states and vote from them because they know that now, especially, most people hate them and would be marching in front of the houses of the Congress critters...if they actually lived and worked there.
Thank you! Don’t know what I was drinking...ur...thinking.
I didn’t know what the vote was either and it took awhile to find the vote for some reason.
And it’s a nice and neat little racket, even at the state level, that you can’t cut or trim anything. If you try, you’ll have a Derper “Judge” order spending and employees reinstated. The Founding Fathers would be crying out to us, “Why haven’t you gotten rid of this tyranny ?”
Yes.
I completely misread the article. Second time today. I hate getting old.
I hear ya, but it’s better than the alternative.
Last year about this time I said the definition of old in years is 78 but in a week or so I may reassess that to 79. :^)
R U Worried Yet??
Happy birthday!
I’ve heard that idea before - they also need to stay in DORMITORIES - not hotels - so that all have equal digs for the duration of the session. Then, they won’t have to take bribes to survive in DC.
Government Unions. thank you JFK:
Executive Order 10988 is a United States presidential executive order issued by President John F. Kennedy on January 17, 1962 that recognized the right of federal employees to collective bargaining.
When Democrats enact an executive order no judge can rule it unconstitutional like they do for Pres. Trump.
The Federal Government and most governments in the tree are worthless. The system as designed is fine. The people who run it and abused it need to be purged.
.
ILLEGAL and UNNEEDED. A criminal swindle in the making.
Proxy ???? SO They can’t Phone it in themselves ?? - BETTER - Video conference the Vote in (as MORE proof that THEY actually cast the ballot themselves)??
Having them actually BE THERE - Its what is proscribed.
Grounds for finding any action taken in such a way as UnConstitutional and thus ILLEGAL and NULL AND VOID.
Pelosi should be removed IMMEDIATELY for even allowing anything like this.
Time for these Crisis-Mongers to face the music for dangerous actions against The People Of The United States and the Constitution.
The Constitutional Reformation Clock ticks another 15 seconds closer to Midnight.
.
This is what vote by mail is about.
The queen ant wants proxies from all registered democrats and independents
