Democrats Push New $3T Coronavirus Relief Bill Through House

Democrats have powered a massive $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill through the House, an election-year measure designed to brace a U.S. economy in free fall and a health care system struggling to contain a pandemic still pummeling the country.

Friday’s 208-199 vote, with all but one Republican opposed, advances what boils down to a campaign-season display of Democratic economic and health-care priorities. It has no chance of becoming law as written, but will likely spark difficult negotiations with the White House and Senate Republicans. Any product would probably be the last major COVID-19 response bill before November’s presidential and congressional elections.

The enormous Democratic measure would cost more than the prior four coronavirus bills combined. It would deliver almost $1 trillion for state and local governments, another round of $1,200 direct payments to individuals and help for the unemployed, renters and homeowners, college debt holders and the struggling Postal Service.

“Not to act now is not only irresponsible in a humanitarian way, it is irresponsible because it’s only going to cost more,” warned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “More in terms of lives, livelihood, cost to the budget, cost to our democracy.”

Republicans mocked the bill as a bloated Democratic wish-list that was dead on arrival in the GOP-led Senate and, for good measure, faced a White House veto threat. Party leaders say they want to assess how $3 trillion approved earlier is working and see if some states’ partial business reopenings would spark an economic revival that would ease the need for more safety net programs.

Republicans are also sorting through internal divisions and awaiting stronger signals from President Donald Trump about what he will support.

This whole made up catastrophe is like some surrealistic nightmare.

And it becomes more and more apparent that if it wasn’t deliberate, the strategy implemented to use it as a reason to destroy our country was created early on.

Tell the dems and their stimulus to go to hell.

Hey, we are all socialists now. Might as well embrace it because most of it will be enacted after Senate negotiations. Mitch will cave. (SARCASM? or not)

At this point, with most states opening up, it seems like a useless gesture to even think of another relief/pork bill (especially one like this). People are going back to work. If individual states want to keep them home, then it is up to those individual states to fund things. They are causing it, they can fix it. With THEIR money.

Please be dead on arrival in the Senate.

... cowardly Republicans will probably roll over though....

The cancer of the New Deal has metastasized, we are dying as a nation from that very Arbitrary government and nothing will stop it with loons like those in the DNC anywhere near the purse strings.

The AP was quick to point out a Repub voted for the bill, but took their dear sweet time mentioning the Dems who voted "no".

This screed reads like it is very supportive of the Dems and their spending - until the election, where the AP will blame Trump for the massive debt...

With only a nine vote margin of victory it would seem that there is not very strong support for this pig slop. Unfortunately a single R voted for it so the left will be hammering us saying that the bill has bi-partisan support.

The real news story is that the Speaker lost control of her caucus. She was unable to maintain unanimous support for the bill which was actually a statement of the Democrat party platform.

This was the only vote with significant defection.

The message is that if you bear the Pelosi stain you will lose your reelection

Was this passed by proxy? The Senate should adopt a rule that no bill will be considered unless passed by a majority of actual votes of the representatives of the people. A unanimous consent vote will only be accepted if a majority of the people’s representatives were present and had the opportunity to object and demand a roll-call vote.

My concern is that Mitch will take this to conference and make some effort to keep portions of it.

This needs to be discarded in whole.

1800 pages written in secret and Pelousi rams it through the House. You have to pass it to find out how badly you’re screwed.
