A Baltimore restaurant owner said Tuesday that she can't get employees to return to work because they make more in unemployment benefits than in working for her business.
Melony Wagner, who owns Charles Village Pub in Baltimore, said her employees would prefer to continue collecting unemployment than come to work as they make more money staying home, according to a report by FOX 5 News.
"They don't want to [come back to work] and I don't really want a restaurant full of unhappy employees," Wagner told the tv station.
"They don't want to because it is less money. I am not even angry or upset with them. I understand. Why would you want to come back and actually work and make half as much money or two-thirds as much money and you are working as you can get to stay home," Wagner said. The restaurant is currently open for carry-out orders and has hired high school students to make deliveries.
The increase in unemployment totals is a key provision in the CARES Act, a coronavirus relief bill implemented to help struggling Americans in the midst of the pandemic that led businesses across the country to close.

If she recalls them and they refuse, don’t they lose their unemployment benefits?
I thought Sen Tim Scott said they were going to fix this ‘glitch’, when asked (a few weeks ago) about the fact people are making more, sitting at home on their....sofas, than they were when actually working.
Hmmmm.
This isn’t just a Baltimore issue, I’ve spoken to several employers in Long Island who have the same problem.
It’s more profitable to stay home than to work with the current system in place ( which is exactly what someone like Rep. AOC wants )
Good question. She’d need to report them. Then they’d just be pissed and spit in the food etc.
Where in Charm City is Charles Village?
I thought I heard the same thing.
If they refuse work, their unemployment should end.
This will be all over the nation. Thanks Democrats, for helping ruin business owners and therefore the work ethic and then subsequently the economy. Wow....
In New York State you will be cut off from unemployment if you are offered reemployment but refuse to return to work.
What are they going to do when it runs out? And as mentioned, don’t they have to return or lose their UI? Companies are notified of their employees on UI so if they don’t return they should be reported as quit.
Plus, you don’t have to deal with the b_ _ _ _ h at work, or whatever you call him/her. That is a huge factor too non one wants to get talking about with their name on it.
Time to hire new employees. That’s really painful but its time to do it.
Exactly. Cut them off - if they refuse work, they don’t deserve benefits.
What are they going to do when the unemployment runs out???
You can’t stay home and collect unemployment if you are offered your job back in New York. If you lie about this the state will take the money back.
All the employer has to do is contact the state and tell them the names of the employees who refused to return.
the way the cares act works. basically if you have “concern” of Covid or have people at “risk” at home or you yourself is at “risk” you don’t have to work. Basically there is an incentive to stay on unemployment until the end of July.
Unemployment ain’t forever.
Nan will go to bat for them... and the employer will hire other people.
There are plenty of out of work restaurant employees not getting unemployment whod be happy to work
