Incoming national security advisor Michael Flynn’s calls with Russia’s former ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, were wiretapped as part of the bogus investigation into Russian collusion—an investigation that was not based on any empirical evidence.
Because U.S. intelligence agencies are barred from spying on Americans without court approval, the names of citizens on NSA reports are masked to protect their identities. Flynn’s name, however, was “unmasked” on transcripts of his conversations with Kislyak, and subsequently leaked.
There are 16 “authorized individuals” who requested the unmasking of Flynn between November 8, 2016 and January 31, 2017. Included among that list are the following Obama administration officials:
Vice President Joe Biden FBI Director James Comey CIA Director John Brennan Director for National Intelligence James Clapper Obama’s Chief of Staff Denis McDonough
Grenell sent the list to Republican senators on Wednesday. “I declassified the enclosed document, which I am providing to you for your situational awareness,” Grenell wrote in a letter accompanying the list.
While requesting the unmasking of Flynn itself isn’t a crime if you have the proper security clearance, the unmasking of American citizens for political purposes is a criminal act. The leaking of Flynn’s name to the media was indeed, a criminal act.

Does anyone on this forum know how the unmasking procedure works? For instance, is the identity of the citizen known by those who make the request to unmask?
There is a really big difference between that list of people requesting the identity of person X on a particular phone call and the list of people requesting permission to divulge the identity of Flynn to others in order to discuss the phone call with those others.
Since, the article states that unmasking for political purposes is illegal, the implication is that the second scenario is the case. But I would like that verified.
There are many of us on FreeRepublic that held the highest of security clearances while in the military (mine was NATO Cosmic/TS when I was stationed in Germany). Just having that clearance could be a white knuckler. To tell you the truth, I doubt I ever saw material that reached that level, which was fine with me.
The major benefit to my (and my batter) was the ability to act as Army Liasion Officer during tac evals at Hahn AB. I was one of only two officers that had a TS, and the Battery CO had a much more important job. I've got many stories (unclassified, of course) from my days in there, but they're interesting only to myself...lol.
There really needs to be a crackdown on these abuses, it is such a mess in DC. Dozens of perp walk would be a good start, but I also remember the lenient treatment accorded Sandy Berger...he can rot in Hell as far as I'm concerned.

I'd say he forgot to do this BEFORE they started the unmasking and was covering his a**.
They, coup co-conspirators, all knew it was Flynn who was the one being unmasked. It was done for political purposes. What’s so hard to get?
I would think it nearly impossible to be in Flynn’s position and be able, let alone expect, to conduct a completely private phone call.
Who knows?
But the Homobama Adminstration isn't alone in unmasking requests:
There were 9,217 unmasking requests in the 12-month period between September 2015 and August 2016, the first period in which numbers are publicly available.
The period was during the latter years of the Obama administration.
The number rose during the Trump administration. The 9,529 requests in 2017 grew to 16,721 in 2018 and 10,012 last year.

You believe that they knew it was Flynn and I believe they knew it was Flynn, but if the procedure is to request the unmasking of Person X, whose identity is usually previously unknown, then providing lists of unmasking requests is not particularly indicting. What’s so hard to get?
