Former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper said Thursday it is “routine” to “unmask” American citizens who have been caught up in surveillance of foreign individuals as Republicans spark an uproar over allegations that officials spied on former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
“Over the six and a half almost seven years when I served as DNI I would say perhaps once or twice a week perhaps,” Clapper said on CNN when asked how frequently he would request an American’s identity to be revealed.
“It’s a routine thing. It’s appropriate and legitimate when you have a valid foreign intelligence target engaging with a U.S. person. Is it, for example, an insider, someone in the government engaging with a foreign adversary? So it’s important from the standpoint of potential jeopardy to national security that you understand what’s going on.”
Clapper was one of several Obama-era officials named on Wednesday by the Trump administration and Republican senators who they say asked for documents that led to Flynn being “unmasked” from intelligence reports between the 2016 election and President Trump’s inauguration.

So he’s basically admitting that it was routine during the Obama administration which we already knew was corrupt. The real question is - was it routine during ANY OTHER administration, dolt?
It’s a routine thing to unmask conservatives as part of continuing coup in which the Deep State is trying to take absolute power over either the entire world or perhaps initially just the United States. Clapper, Comey, Brennan, and their ilk disgust me.

twice a week for the last 2 months of Obama’s tenure would be at most 16. What was released was just for Flynn, 30+. How many other unmasks during this time?
That's a good question.
Considering they didn't know it was him when they made the request (why request the unmasking if you know who it is?) you have to wonder why was he on so many calls that piqued the interest of the intelligence community.

I can imagine DNI like Clapper and the top floor at CIA would see the unmasked information. But there were several dozen people that saw it who had no reason to see it. That’s pretty hard to explain.
And the unmasking started well before the “phone call”.
I think we’re going to find that Trump was under surveillance since about 2012, and the FISA stuff was just to give it a veneer of legality if it were uncovered, which they did not expect to happen.
I think they absolutely knew it was him. He has had cross-hairs on him since he was fired by Obama.

IT IS NOT ROUTINE FOR THAT many requests, from that many people, one one person. Klapper is full of it.
IT IS NOT normal for any sense of the measure. 39 different people is OUTRAGEOUS and would raise red flags.
James Clapper seems to have no clue that he is in a very small canoe in the Niagara River paddling toward the falls.
Of course its routine, for thugs and criminals to skate after effing someone and effing the family’s.

Boy you don’t get it, do you? They didn’t “unmask“ Flynn.
They were actively spying on him. The so-called “unmasking” was a ruse.
They knew who they were unmasking because they had been monitoring all his calls illegally.
Wake up.
If it was ‘routine’ then they wouldn’t be masked in the first place.
If it was ‘routine’ then it wouldn’t show an increase of whatever 1000’s % over the last year of the administration.
Was it also routine to inform the Washington Post?
It may be routine, but leaking info obtained by unmasking American citizens is a felony.
