Utah Decriminalizes Bigamy

Utah has decriminalized bigamy, which allows two people to marry while one or both of them is already married, to a crime carrying the same penalty as a traffic ticket.

Utah GOP Gov. Gary Herbert signed the bill into law in March and it has gone into effect today.

Republican state Sen. Deidre Henderson, who sponsored the bill, said Utah's previous law never kept people from maintaining polygamous relationships, it only pushed them into the shadows.

It's still illegal but carries a lesser penalty so SS would not recognize it.

I think you are supposed to get a starter wife, and then as they age out you get one or two to supplement.

In polygamist family pics, it's often hard to tell the older daughters from the younger wives.

Historically, you have men providing support and resources, and women providing sex and children. A wealthy man can support multiple women.

When women are supported by multiple men, the men tend to have their support be in the form of cash for sex, on a transactional basis.

Well, just as bi-cycle refers to a cycle with two wheels and tri-cycle refers to a device with three wheels, bi-gamy refers to two wives, trigamy, three wives, and pentagamy five wives. Not enough room in the dictionary for every iteration, you just have to use the Greek prefix with gamy (e.g. pentagon).

Very interesting question. It will end up in court very soon. If the court says “cover them all”, insurance rates may drastically jump. Perhaps one will be allowed to cover some spouses and leave others uncovered. Or an insurer may pull out of the state.

Or the insurer may base their rates on the number of dependents insured (whether co-wives or children, won't matter), with the employer paying the first $X, and the employee paying the rest via paycheck deduction.

Polygamy is on a more solid legal foundation than gay marriage. It would just have been a matter of time before a man with two wives, married in Pakistan, sued to have his plural marriage recognized.
