Pelosi pushes for next coronavirus relief package as McConnell urges a "pause"

Washington -- As the coronavirus pandemic leaves thousands of Americans dead and roils the economy, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is urging Congress to move on the next phase of coronavirus relief legislation. In an interview with MSNBC on Monday evening, Pelosi said there is a "monumental" need for the next legislative package, with a focus on helping struggling Americans and cash-strapped states and localities.

"We have a big need. It's monumental. And therefore, it's a great opportunity to say: let's work together to get this done. There's a way to open the economy based on science, testing, testing, testing and let's get on with it. That's what we're here to do," Pelosi told anchor Chris Hayes.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has suggested it is unnecessary to immediately begin work on a new aid package. He said during an appearance at a livestream event for the Trump campaign that he intends to "hit pause" on coronavirus relief funds.

"To those who would suggest a pause, I'll say the hunger doesn't take a pause. The rent doesn't take a pause. The hardship doesn't take a pause," Pelosi told Hayes.

Since Nutty Nancy stalled the first three relief packages to suit her own warped political agenda, I fail to see the urgency now.

I’m sure Trump has already been working on this. He definitely won’t be opposed to it. Never thought I’d say this, but Trump loves stimulus that we cannot pay for.

Open the economy and we won’t need relief packages.

It was roaring along just fine until the lockdown.

Next package has to stop with the +$600 UE weekly handouts. Thousands are refusing to return to their jobs and keep drawing it.

For once, I’m glad to see the Turtle is in Turtle Mode. Maybe focus on court confirmations while the House Democraps play with themselves.

If they get offered their job back, they lose the unemployment benefit whether they take the job or not. That’s the way that works.

Blue States slow walking their residents to re-open in order to collect billions from Feds. NY is paying unemployed more to stay home then the regular benefits until July. Cuomo wants at least 13 billion & growing, DeBlasio wants Billions for NYC...Trump will alienate Conservatives if he falls for this, & the Blue States won’t support him either. Pelosi needs to be shut down by Senate..high stakes drama..Hopefully Trump lets the Senate do their job, & stays out of it...but he never does...

Until the general public actually feels the national debt - in terms of direct higher taxes or higher interest rates, there is (unfortunately) no current political downside to stimulus.

The fact we are leaving this debt to our children just doesn’t sway anyone.

I’m an advocate for a special tax - not progressive - everyone has to pay an additional - say $500 a year - regardless of income - strictly to pay down the national debt; and that amount goes up as the debt goes up. That would change our thinking. (I also wouldn’t get elected!)

Seeing A LOT of that here. Almost everyone here think you can sit on ass forever on unemployment. Doesn’t work like that. You’re not only obligated to look for work, but once you’re offered a job you lose all unemployment going forward whether you take the job or not.

Since the bill will be passed by electronic voting, it can not be accepted by the Senate. It does not actually exist. There were no votes

She should step down as speaker as long as she is at home eating ice cream. Definitely should not be getting paid.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that he and his counterparts in Oregon, Washington, Colorado and Nevada were calling for the federal government to provide an extra $1 trillion in aid to their coronavirus-ravaged states.
