BEAR, Del. - A second victim has succumbed to his injuries just days after a shooting took place in a cemetery in New Castle County.
The shooting happened at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery located on Chesapeake City Road around 10:15 a.m. Friday.
Delaware State Police say 85-year old Lidia Marino was pronounced deceased on scene. Her husband 86-year-old Paul C. Marino was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he died on Saturday. The couple was from Elkton, Maryland.
Delaware State Police have identified the suspect as Sheldon C. Francis, 29, of Middletown, but have not said if the suspect and the victims were connected.
Francis was later found dead in a wooded area near the scene of the shooting. It is undetermined at this time if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or as a result of the earlier exchange of gunfire.
Today, a moment of tragedy shattered the peaceful atmosphere of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. We are deeply sorry for the families and loved ones of the victims, said Secretary of State Jeff Bullock during a press conference Friday. We are thankful for the quick thinking and actions of our cemetery staff and the Delaware State Police, and grateful that no one else was hurt in this dangerous situation.
The investigation is active and ongoing and will be furthered by the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Det. M. Ryde by calling 302-698-8557.

"Earlier exchange of gunfire"? Exchange? What is the reporter referring to? Did someone shoot back at Francis while he was murdering the elderly couple? Or is this just muddled writing?
Imagine living a good life, filled with family and children and grandchildren.
And then, one day, in your golden years, someone steals that life from you in a violent way.
Yeah, a gunfight with LE is probably what the writer is referring to. Sloppy writing/editing.
Of course the scumbag-disposing taxpayer-relief shot is welcome regardless.
Just a couple of privileged old White people died, or something.
And the untimely death and tragic loss of an aspiring young Rapper, future nuclear scientist, or something.
His momma was certain he was a Good Boy.
‘but have not said if the suspect and the victims were connected’
what does that mean?
No doubt thats true. 🤪👎/S
what does that mean?
It means he may have done a job for them in the past and got dismissed, or they may have called the police because he didn't clean up after his dog, any number of reasons for him to want to kill them other than a random shooting.
Possible but a Delaware veterans cemetery is kind of far to drive if you have a pre-existing beef with people who live in Elkton, MD.
Without further details, it is hard to assess the shooter’s true motivations. Obviously, he can’t be asked and there is no detailed information on the encounter yet published. There are many questions to be answered. Prominent among them is why was law enforcement on the scene quickly enough to confront him in the nearby woods? Already in the cemetery for area/event security? (VE Day was last week.). Etc., etc.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the shooter had some complaint with DoD or the VA and chose the cemetery for an act of twisted revenge. Race may not even be a factor. Just bad luck.
Time will tell. I hope the media tell will as well.
The cemetery is about halfway between Elkton and Middletown.
That is why I tell everyone to conceal carry. At least then, you have a chance to fight back...no matter how old you are.
And yes, I know that CCW does not help against a determined sniper.

Yes, that connected stuff is just standard legalise.
They were visiting the grave of their son, Anthony Marino, who died in 2017.
So, what do you make the distance to be?
Looking at the locations in MapQuest, it looks like the cemetery is 8-10 miles from Elkton. Not a great distance actually.
I've been to both, many times. Elkton is about 8 miles from the cemetery, maybe 10 minute drive on one road if you're in a hurry. The cemetery is very close to the state line.
No hate crime charges apply. Random murder. /sarc
The couple lived in Maryland, where getting a license to carry a concealed weapon is much, much harder than in Delaware. And even so, there is no reciprocity between the states. My CCDW is not effective in MD, and theirs is not in DE. Even if the couple felt that they had to be armed just to go to the Vet’s cemetery just up the road a few minutes.
Middletown to Elkton is about 16 miles - so about 8 miles from each. Other than the identifications, there has not been much written about either the victims nor the shooter.
I am very well aware of criminal, Unconstitutional laws that leftist, totalitarian democrats have passed and leftist, totalitarian, democrat judges have allowed to exist and leftist, totalitarian police enforce without giving their jackboot behavior a single thought.
I trust my hyperbole comes across loud and clear.
Thanks for the reply
