Elon Musk threatens to move Tesla out of California, sue over coronavirus order shutting down Fremont factory

Tesla CEO Elon Musk lashed out at Alameda County public health officials Saturday on Twitter, claiming his car company will leave California and sue the county over coronavirus lockdown orders that have shuttered its Fremont factory.

“Tesla is filing a lawsuit against Alameda County immediately. The unelected & ignorant ‘Interim Health Officer’ of Alameda is acting contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense!” Musk tweeted Saturday morning, referring to Health Officer Dr. Erica Pan.

He continued in another tweet, “Frankly, this is the final straw. Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately. If we even retain Fremont manufacturing activity at all, it will be dependen (sic) on how Tesla is treated in the future. Tesla is the last carmaker left in CA.”

Maybe off topic, but California is facing a $54 billion budget deficit in the next fiscal year, due to the economic downturn caused by our shutdown of the economy.

I can't wait until we all get a giant tax raise to pay for bailouts of the blue states and get to watch 100% of that money go into paying off the pension debt for the public sector unions. All of it, no matter how many billions they get.

“The only problem is, Elon Musk has made most of his billions from Government grants, and most of his employees will be gun-grabbing babykilling proggies who will flip what State they go to, like parasites destroying their host.”

This. Red states should be very careful welcoming him. It is like getting into a relationship with Red China.

Until Musk builds an entire new value system, he's poison.

This is an email that I sent to the author of this article:

Mr. Savidge,

This may come as a surprise to Californians but the same economic imperatives that led businesses to leave the United Stated for lower-cost, and more business -accommodating countries, can happen to California within the United States. I don’t think Elon Musk is joking, he will start moving his businesses to other states that are more free-enterprise and eventually California will starve if it keeps doing what Gov. Newsom and his fellow travelers are dictating. You might think that you, as a journalist, are immune from market forces but, when no one can buy your paper and there are not enough people to buy the goods and service of those who advertise on your website, you too will starve.

basically you are gambling on the prospect that a socialist revolution will save you from inevitable market forces but I do not think that this is likely. I think that you and the fools in your profession are making a very poor bet.

Regards,

An American patriot

This is the final straw but earlier this week, apparently California wouldn’t let him name his new baby “”X Æ A-12”.

This is not a sudden decision. Musk recently listed all of his California mansions for sale.

How in the sam hill does he plan to balance his budget anyway?

He expects the smelly, Bible clinging, honest, hard working, tax paying Walmart shoppers in fly-over country to bail him out.

A bit over the top on your post. When it comes to Tesla, they received a loan from the federal government (like other automakers received). Tesla paid back the loan early, with interest. The federal government/taxpayers made many millions in interest from the paid-back loans. As for California, they will lose billions in potential taxes from Tesla if they move to Nevada. Tesla currently has a flow of materials between Fremont, California and their Nevada factories. It would make sense to consolidate the Fremont operations with their Nevada operations, making the supply chain shorter and more efficient. (That's what they did with their other plants in China, Germany, etc.)

Plenty made that move before the "crisis" and many more no doubt at least considering it.

Elon Musk, merely because he is such an industrial celebrity, just might start a rush for the exit.
