Praying may save us from murder hornets after all.
Wild video posted online shows a giant Asian hornet finally meeting its match: a brain-gobbling praying mantis.
The clip starts with the mantis completely still as its five eyes patiently watch the hornet an insect that can grow to 2 inches long, is known to kill up to 50 people a year in Japan, and recently arrived in the US.
The mantis suddenly springs forward with its long, modified front legs, keeping a vise-like grip on the doomed hornet, which twists and tries to turn its head in feeble attempts to put up a fight.
The long-legged carnivore then starts pecking away at the hornet eventually eating its head and brains.
Thank you for this nightmare, remarked one Twitter user of the video posted online, which had been viewed almost 160,000 times by Thursday morning.

Start with the eye and go for the brain...
Well, if you go deep enough in somebody’s eye, you *will* change their mind.
Time to start breeding mantises! :)
Imagine one six feet tall. Now imagine it’s a divorce attorney. Thus endeth the lesson.
“Time to start breeding mantises! :)”
Definitely!
I found one that was easily 5”. I think he was stalking the hummingbirds.
It’s going to get mad hornet disease eating those brains.
Well, there you have it. The Next Great Media-Generated Panic, nipped in the bud. Literally. :-)
On a side note, I personally think the name “murder hornets” sounds kind of stupid.
I think the Mantis got the upper hand because he attacked it from the rear. I’ve seen the hornet kill the Mantis in a head to head battle. The hornet used its mandibles to decapitate the Mantis. The Hornets stinger is a killer too.
i saw this earlier..total bad ass mantis...i used to catch them as a kid. ..very rad.

Works good one on one on a tabletop. Lets see a PM against a nest of the phuckers!
Praying Mantids are awesome. I used to raise them when my Sons were young.
My ultimate goal was to breed them to be about seven feet tall and place them on our southern border.
The hornet is still trying to when its head has been almost entirely devoured - interesting.
Here is the two+ minute video of this bitchin' saga.
I noticed that, too....even after the head had been devoured...sort of like how certain people keep voting after dying.
i knew abput these a decade ago.
They were not called ‘murder’ hornets
They were labeled Giant Asain hornets.
What richard head in the media decided to call them murder hornets?
“They were labeled Giant Asain hornets.”
It’s an infinitely better name than “murder hornets”. :-)
One was found eating an in-air caught hummingbird.
