The CEO of Gilead Sciences, the company that makes the promising drug remdesivir, says it will be available to treat COVID-19 patients as early as this week after receiving approval from the FDA.
The drug showed promising results in a study of more than 1,000 people around the world and has been touted as one of the first steps in reopening the economy.
Scientists found that patients who were given it recovered 31 percent faster than those who did not and that the mortality rate among recipients was around three percent lower; it was 8 percent in the drug recipients and 11.6 percent in placebo patients.
In an interview with Face The Nation on CBS on Sunday, Gilead CEO Dan O'Day said the company had donated its entire supply of the drug to the government to roll out to hospitals across the US and that it will also send some overseas.

You are reading it wrong. the recovery rate in patients treated was 31% faster not 31% of people recovered
it’s a small price for what they plan to gain going forward.
The Chinese tried stealing remdesivir, but under threat from the Trump Administration, concluded a licensing deal with Gilead for their domestic use.
Currently Gilead has (and had before all this) small scale production of the stuff in the US. They also previously gave all that they had in stock to the US DOD for free.
It’s something like 75% of *all* other medication in the US that’s coming from China, or is dependent on ingredients that only come from China - these stats are pre-COVID-19, things have changed a bit since.

It’s not an either-or proposition. There is a significant percentage of the population that either can’t take the hydroxychloroquine-azithromycin-zinc cocktail, or that are in such a bad state that it’s too late for that. My father’s girlfriend is one of them - she can’t take either hydroxychloroquine or azithromycin due to cardiac issues, and she’s far from alone.

there was a much loved Dr in NY that came down with Covid and was in bad shape. His Dr son had to plead to try to get his dad on the trial for the Gilead drug. He was able to get him on it and the Dr recovered.
I never saw whether they tried Trumps drug. Clearly the Drs son could have prescribed it.

There is the key takeaway that the drug is useless. If you recover, you recover. Slow or slightly less slow. If you are going to die, and the drug improves your chance of surviving by 3%, that is pretty insignificant.

Interesting because there are constant weird creepy commercials for Truvada in all the time.
They may not have had hydroxychloroquine available in his local area, or it may have developed too fast for it to be effective. Or his father had cardiac issues, in which case azithromycin is contraindicated.
Something that should be mentioned - we need multiple methods of treatment for this (or really, most) diseases, because humans don’t all respond the same to a given medication (among other reasons). To give one personal example, I have a paradoxical reaction to codeine and some of the morphine derivatives. Not only do I not get pain relief from them, they also don’t make me drowsy. In fact, they make me wired like I had taken ten cups of high-test coffee. I’m not alone - a small but significant portion of the population have the same thing to a greater or lesser degree. Good thing we have other options, no?
So, yeah, the hydroxychloroquine cocktail isn’t a cure-all for everyone, it shouldn’t be promoted as such, and it should be eventually used as one of many tools in the box against COVID-19.

I have thalessemia and was just reading about how one drug class that is often used for malaria is a problem because there is some kind of barrier. I haven’t seen that in regards to Trump’s drug yet.
