The CEO of Gilead Sciences, the company that makes the promising drug remdesivir, says it will be available to treat COVID-19 patients as early as this week after receiving approval from the FDA.
The drug showed promising results in a study of more than 1,000 people around the world and has been touted as one of the first steps in reopening the economy.
Scientists found that patients who were given it recovered 31 percent faster than those who did not and that the mortality rate among recipients was around three percent lower; it was 8 percent in the drug recipients and 11.6 percent in placebo patients.
In an interview with Face The Nation on CBS on Sunday, Gilead CEO Dan O'Day said the company had donated its entire supply of the drug to the government to roll out to hospitals across the US and that it will also send some overseas.

So if they were able to test this why didn’t they test the Quinine solution too?
It’s way cheaper, and the testing time could have been cut in half because instead of only a 4 days ‘improvement’ it seems to cure it in HOURS
Trump should dictate each state gets 4,000 pills and watch heads explode.
Remdesivir, developed by biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, headquartered in Foster City, Calif., mimics a building block of RNA, the coronaviruss genetic material. Sounds like they want to establish this is THE treatment. give it away now make the profits next outbreak.
NO.
So 69% had no change in recovery rate. Big Whoop!
This drug has underwhelming results. Too bad.
so while this is great...it still requires hospitalization which means you have to have breathing problems or very dangerous lab results
I know many of you think you can waltz in to your Drs office and get trump’s dr but that just isnt the case.
if you have symptoms ...Before you go you should call and ask if they are willing to prescribe it. You are going to have to Dr shop
If you are in Texas, Louis Coates in prescribing it.
Drug dealers like to give away free samples to garner future business. At least that’s how it’s done on the streets.
Isn’t remdesivir the drug that is completely sourced from China at the moment? Or am I confusing it with something else?
Based on 1,000 test patients...
* 31% faster recovery
* 8% mortality in the drug recipients vs 11.6% in placebo patients
Does that sound like a breakthrough drug to you? That strikes me as ho-hum. It doesnt sound anywhere near as good as HCQ + Az + Zn + anticoagulants
I still support the hydroxy whatever with Z pack and zinc.
Gilead is also providing the government The HIV prep drug Truvada as part of Trumps war on HIV. Its either a flat donation or dirt cheap. Cant recall which.
I am watching frontline Drs talk about how and what they are treating patients with..they are getting results from Gilead’s drug.
Its an IV
I have seen that drug being talked about with Covid as a possibility. dont remember the details..maybe as a preventative
Thats not my experience in critically ill patients nor is it the widespread experience. We give hydroxychloroquine because until now thats all we had but the results were less than impressive. I am glad to have more options
