I agree that it helps to deter spreading, however, using the likes of Taiwan in comparison to the USA is rather faulty, as there are other factors to explain this, and the vast majority of deaths in the US are in NYC where mask wearing is the law, and it is very prevalent in my city, which has the most deaths in the state.
Those simple sets of numbers USFRIENDINVICTORIA came up with speak for themselves. True, other factors come into play, but no other factor will prove to be more important than what those numbers indicate. Because the mere fact of a population which is wise enough to wear masks during a viral outbreak will also implement any additional measures necessary. So this simple metric becomes self fulfilling and one which can reliably be counted own to produce similar results when applied by other countries or entities.
The beauty here is in the metrics' simplicity of complexity.

Taiwan (mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 0.3

A p/n95 can protect the wearer but the seal around your mouth/nose must be complete. a 3m 6001 shop mask or something similar must seal your nose and mouth and would offer more protection to the wearer.

The real and unstated purposes of “mandatory masking”:
1) Dog-whistle obedience training. Easy to see who is “compliant” and who needs “re-education”
2) Darn near impossible to wear a mask with a runny nose...so it will force the sick to STAY HOME (which they ought to do anyway, but without government orders)
And just 270 cases and no deaths? Well, if you can use Vietnam as an argument for the effectiveness of masks then you must also consider other factors. One of which is that the median age in Vietnam is 32.5 years. But you must also disallow other factors, such as perhaps some acquired immunity. Or maybe it's the fish soup. Or survival of the fittest from the war. Since according to this report from one living there the sanitary practices were not very good.
It is asinine to require that people wear masks, mostly because you can’t find masks or gloves at any store anywhere. Someone I know had to mail order a few packs from Office Depot. She got two packs with 5 masks in each pack for a total of $65. Who can afford that?

A new study from researchers at the University of Chicago says that a combination of cotton with silk, chiffon, or flannel can create a well-functioning filter.

Four layers of silk — imagine someone bundled up in a scarf — also performed well.
But the best overall filtration was provided by a sandwich consisting of one layer of the tighter-woven cotton plus two layers of silk, or two layers of chiffon, or one layer of flannel — because of the electrostatic filter created by the non-cotton layers.
Moron. We certainly could make more n95 masks for the public. We could have better compliance because these masks help the wearer as well as others.
They could be reused because they are sturdier. Leave them out in sunlight for a day or 2 to decontaminate.
It is not your fault, but this entire thread failed to mention one critical benefit of wearing masks—reducing the viral load if one gets the virus.
A lower viral load gives everyone a better chance of minor symptoms rather than major symptoms from the virus, since it gives the immune system time to fight it.
The perfect is the enemy of the good—and masks are a reasonable approach for reasonable people.
Actually of those 270 cases, I believe 50 are foreigners, who were here when found to be infected.

Yeah, if worn “improperly,” the wearer runs a greater risk of infection. Too bad for the morons and slobs. Most kids can learn to wear one properly if properly taught.
At least the mouth breathers wearing the masks improperly aren’t blowing the virus as far. ;)
0.3 microns, 300 nm, is the most challenging to remove (more or less). That's why NIOSH test standards are at that size. You can Google for the technical explanation.
