CONCRETE LOVE

Our Daily Bread
July 28, 1998

"Though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and
though I give my body to be burned, but have not love,
it profits me nothing." 1 Corinthians 13:3

The story is told of a child psychologist who spent many hours constructing a new driveway at his home. Just after he smoothed the surface of the freshly poured concrete, his small children chased a ball across the driveway, leaving deep footprints. The man yelled after them with a torrent of angry words. His shocked wife said, "You're a psychologist who's supposed to love children." The fuming man shouted, "I love children in the abstract, not in the concrete!"

I chuckled at the alleged incident and groaned at the play on words, but the story rang true for me. While I agree in principle with the concept of self-giving love, I find myself failing to express it to the people I live and work with each day.

First Corinthians 13 describes Christian love in terms of its tangible expression: "Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil" (vv.4-5).

As a theory, love isn't worth much; as a practice, it is the world's greatest treasure. When footprints are in the driveway, people discover whether our love exists in the abstract or in the concrete. -- DCM

"Follow with reverent steps the great example
of Him whose holy work was doing good:
so shall the wide earth seem out Father's temple,
each loving life a psalm of gratitude.

Love is an active verb!

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine
feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

The One Who Sees

Bible in a Year:

You may be sure that your sin will find you out.

Numbers 32:23

“Oh no!” My wife’s voice rang out when she stepped into the kitchen. The moment she did, our ninety-pound Labrador retriever “Max” bolted from the room.

Gone was the leg of lamb that had been sitting too close to the edge of the counter. Max had consumed it, leaving only an empty pan. He tried to hide under a bed. But only his head and shoulders fit. His uncovered rump and tail betrayed his whereabouts when I went to track him down.

“Oh, Max,” I murmured, “Your ‘sin’ will find you out.” The phrase was borrowed from Moses, when he admonished two tribes of Israel to be obedient to God and keep their promises. He told them: “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).

Sin may feel good for a moment, but it causes the ultimate pain of separation from God. Moses was reminding his people that God misses nothing. As one biblical writer put it, “Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).

Though seeing all, our holy God lovingly draws us to confess our sin, repent of it (turn from it), and walk rightly with Him (1 John 1:9). May we follow Him in love today.

By:  James Banks

Reflect & Pray

How does the truth that God sees everything we do and still loves us encourage you to turn from sin? In what practical ways can you respond to His love today?

Thank You for being “the God who sees me” (Genesis 16:13). I praise You that though You see both good and bad, You sent Your Son to save and set me free. Help me to walk in loving obedience.

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...a Blessed Lord’s Day and Shavua tov to you and yours.

Did you and Penny and Blue get out today?

Are you still on lockdown? Any loosening?

Today was another shocker. The husband of my neighbor who died on Thursday died today. Since it was so sudden and right on the heels of his wife’s death, we had both the local coroner, the State Police, The State Medical Examiner (two carloads of them) and forensic investigators surrounding the house from 10:30AM till after 3:00PM. And of course, the Tyvek Suits, gowns, masks, booties, face shields, and respirators making the surreal scene even worse. Poor old man. I think he just gave up.

I really liked these folks.

I have lost two friends within two days of each other. Since the whole neighborhood was in lockdown, I could just barely manage to sneak out the back door and cut through yards to walk Penny.

Blue was surrounded by Police Cars, so there was no escape.

Tomorrow’s ride got cancelled, but I am going to do it anyway, solo.

Good evening, mountainlion…and a Blessed Lord’s Day to you and yours.

Did the rain finish off your snow? Any loosening of your lockdown?

The very last of the snow on my lawn has finally disappeared just today.

God Bless America for sure.

Howdy, Kathy.

Did you get caught up enough on corrections that you could kick back this weekend? It’s been a beautiful day up there to get out to drive around a bit to keep your car batteries juiced up.

Have your “peeping toms” been back on the roof again? LOL

Oh no, ML. Such sad news. I was afraid this would happen when you said he was taken off in an ambulance the other day.

I did get to talk with him a little last night. I really thought he was going to make it.

But then today he just passed away.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.
