Near- or above-average temperatures are anticipated from the Southwest to the Northeast and South. Some cooler air is possible across the North to begin April. The end of the month could be even warmer compared to average...
April is expected to bring seasonal or above-average temperatures to most Americans, but the northern tier could see relatively cool temperatures for April, according to the latest outlook from The Weather Company, an IBM Business.
Near-average temperatures are anticipated from California to New York, while much of the South will be above average.
This forecast, if it verifies, will continue what has already been a warmer-than-average meteorological spring for many parts of the nation.
Corpus Christi, Texas, New Orleans and Pensacola, Florida, are having the warmest March on record. But these warmer temperatures could take a partial break as April begins.
Through much of the winter, the polar vortex and its extreme strength has dominated the temperature pattern across the country. The abnormally strong band of wind in the arctic has trapped cold air over Canada and Russia so far, but there is some indication that a piece or two of that cold air could be present in the northern U.S. in early April.
Dr. Todd Crawford, the author of the April outlook, thinks that the atmosphere could block up just enough in the first week of April to deflect some cold air into the northern Rockies, upper Midwest and possibly the East.
"The real forecast problem is how long this week's blocking will last ... and we're skeptical it will last long, thus we didn't go too crazy with the colder changes in the eastern U.S.," said Crawford.
However, while warmer-than-normal forecasts abound, finding out how they fared is much harder (Google is not much help). We who live in the Northeast know it was actually quite colder than average, but I have only found one story actually stating this:
Boston sees lowest high temperature for April on record By Caroline Enos Globe Correspondent,Updated April 30, 202
This month was pretty cold and damp, and Boston saw its lowest high temperature for April on record.
The city hit 62 degrees on April 6 and 7, which isnt too shabby for a month that tends to feel more like the tail end of winter than the start of spring.
But thats the warmest it got this month the first time this has happened since Boston weather records were first kept in 1872, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Dunham.
The average temperature in Boston from April 1 through April 29 was 44.5 degrees, making this April the 19th coldest on record...We havent gotten into any real warm spells, Dunham said. Weve had a lot of rain and clouds for the month." (https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/04/30/metro/boston-sees-lowest-high-temperature-april-record/)
However, according to the NOAA long range forecast, it is always supposed to be at least warmer than average, likely influenced by Global Warming bias.
Here in the NE (where the Frozen Chosen conservative Christians are few), I am waiting for it, but God is in control, and will make it work all work out for the good of those who love Him.
We’ve been 10 degrees below for at least a month here in Upstate.
Psst,,,its May.
:]
Yep...been downright chilly here in NC in April, even this am, May 2...walked with jacket and gloves.
Only thing spring here has been flowers and early dawns.
We just had one of the coldest Aprils on record here in eastern New England.
Great. Now that April is gone, what’s May look like?
We know warm weather is a problem and cold temperatures as well. But this is the most insidious symptom of Global Warming. Abnormally normal temperatures!
Lol. I thought the same thing. The article was from March 29th. I guess it can be used to see how accurate the forecast was.
However, as these "experts" are "predicting the past" I suppose there's an outside chance their predictions will be more accurate than those of other recently worshipped "experts".
April felt like February here in the Boston area.
It snowed last week and i was scrapping ice off my windshield 3 mornings ago.
woke up this morning freezing my butt off because the window was opened a crack.
Yep, spring gardening significantly slowed down here in CT.
But of course they forecast what they think is more likely or probable, not what they are certain of.
Here in South Central Alabama, the whole month was spectacular; a little too much rain, but temperatures in the mid 70s all month long. A couple of days made the 80s, and some days were only in high 60s.
I just checked my weather station average for the month, and it was 66.7 degrees, but that also counts overnight lows.
It was hardly a hot April in the South, and actually on the cool side.
The last image above is for April-May-June:
Latest (May-July):
If you are North or West of the city you may have more frost Thurs. night:

Another load of poo from the prognosticators. It was colder in April than February here. Five inches of snow 4 days ago, three snow storms in April, still snow in my yard,
24 degrees 2 mornings ago.. Same people tell me “the Earf has a fever”.
I know that well, and my comment is made today which shows the reason for my post (More un-real forcasting).
But that the NOAA almost always predicts warmer-than-average temps is what is suspicious. See post Winter outlook 2018-2019 : Howd we do?
Meanwhile The Weather Company also got the last NE Winter wrong by predicting colder than normal temps: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3794812/posts
Oh, sorry. Didn’t actually read the whole post.
Yeah, makes sense in the current climate, shall we say.
I have a very accurate personal weather station at my house near DC. According to my station, the average high for this past April was 64.7 and the average low was 41. The average high for DC in April is 67 and the average low is 44. Climate predictors are about as smart as smart as virus predictors.
Yes, growing but no place to go here in MA. Almost freezing night temps, which are about 10 degrees colder than last year at this time. But thank God for what we have. Better than up North for warmth.
Plants from seed, waiting to plant in about 2 weeks, glory to God.
Epic fail for Atlanta. We had the heat on last night. Its been a cool spring so far.
