When schools first announced closures and a shift to online learning, many worried about how this would affect the students who didnt have computers, mobile devices, or adequate high-speed internet. Cities and school districts scrambled to fix this problem, and more than a month later, its still being resolved. But in the meantime, it seems some educators in New York City decided to report parents to child protective services when their children didnt log into classes.
In the past month, several parents have received child welfare visits from the Administration for Childrens Service, local independent news outlet The City reported. According to the parents lawyers, the schools had called the state child abuse and neglect hotline after the children had failed to report for their online classes. In some cases, this occurred even though the parents had been in touch with the Department of Education about having tablets sent to them.
Lawyer Gabriel Freiman described how one of his clients was waiting for a tablet for her kindergartener and had been in touch with the teacher in charge of attendance. But apparently at the school level, the principal later decided that unless our client also ensured that her son went online for their Google Meets at 9 a.m., he would be locked out, Freiman said. And so when he was marked out for three days in a row in early April, the school staff still made a call to the [state hotline] reporting suspected child neglect.
Another family advocate told The City that schools were threatening to report homeless mothers for child neglect. Still another told the story of a parent having to show evidence of their correspondence with the DOE about getting an iPad.

(MEET not MEETS is) “designed for professionals” yet a kindergartener is expected to log in on a tablet by 9am.
ok
Big Brother is watching YOU, comrade...
For schools, the money is all about attendance. They’ll do what they must to protect the revenue stream.
This story is crazy, beginning with the idea that a kindergartner is required to attend school.
And then, when the school has closed, the parent is charged with truancy if the child hasn’t logged in. Nuts!
Yep. And they are going to extremes to keep control of their money source (the students).
This is a weird article.
Don’t know whether it fits the *Another Reason* list of the regular list.
Either way, officially homeschool, and join HSLDA when you do it, and at least you’ll have some recourse when the school Nazi’s come knocking.
Many worried, funny. They cant get the kids to come to school on a regular basis but now the culprit is inequality in not being able to afford tech devices to make in home learning a reality. Not a problem when they are buying 500 dollar sneakers, expensive hair extensions and designer clothes. In the past we heard about est scores being manipulated, and school attendance essential for learning but we all know its about the Benjamins FUNDING
We have a winner!
I have been forced to turn in absentee slips daily for weeks for students that have dropped out so the money kept coming.
How crazy it is for people to snitch on others at a time like this!
Yes, joining HSLDA is a must. They helped us out back in our days of homeschooling and it’s a small price you pay (membership) vs what a family might incur should their case end up in court.
so glad my son will be 16 in Nov. and has not been in an indoctrination de-education classroom since 4th grade
Definitely a reason for real homeschooling, detaching from the government slavey curriculum.
I totally understand.
Now it’s the grandkids turn with schooling. Going to try the charter school route and see how it goes.
Yes, this story really shows the difference between parent-led education and public-school-at-home.
