Coronavirus Lockdown Devastates Jersey Shore’s Historic Fishing Boat Industry
Breitbart ^ | 25 Apr 2020 | Frances Martel

The coronavirus pandemic poses an existential threat to the already beleaguered for-hire fishing boat industry in New Jersey, captains of party boats along the Jersey shore told Breitbart News.

The business owners are urging both state and federal governments to allow them to make a living or help them survive the lockdown.

Party boats offer rides – ranging from half a day to several-day trips, depending on the targeted fish – for those seeking to fish recreationally. The angler pays for their ticket and receives a space on the boat, bait, and service from the mates on board, who help bring the fish aboard and often filet the catches.

The boats are particularly attractive to families and beginner fishermen as they are guaranteed the guidance of a captain who knows where the fish are and the patience of mates willing to explain how to fish and offer tips on how to do it. They also help fishermen who do not have the income to buy and maintain a boat experience deep sea fishing.

Charter boats offer a similar service to smaller groups for those who wish not to fish around strangers or have more control of the experience.

For decades, party and charter boats have offered rides to interested customers in New Jersey for species like bluefish, both summer and winter flounder, black sea bass, striped bass, blackfish, and other native species. Initially, the boats catered almost exclusively to those with a passion for fishing and eating fresh fish, offering the opportunity to earn back much of your ticket on the boat in a fresh and edible catch.

The Chinese Virus is the gift that just keeps on giving for our Leftardian friends.

Just think what a paradise we could have if all are unemployed and dependent upon a universal income, government apartments and food allotments.

All three of our boat manufacturers here have shut down. Several hundred good paying jobs down the tubes in this small town.

I really wonder how the State of New Jersey could ever enforce a shutdown order against a charter fishing company ... especially if that company runs trips way out to the Canyon along the continental shelf.

“The business owners are urging both state and federal governments to allow them to make a living or help them survive the lockdown.”

One thing they are not considering (along with other business owners) is being put out of business by some financially devastating lawsuits filed by employees and customers who may come down with the virus after working or using their services.

80,000 Americans died of the flu the winter of 2018, and you didn't even notice because Chuck Todd didn't hysterically tell you about every single one.

Plus, 30-million third-world inhabitants are starving at this very moment because of the shutdown, and by year's end there will be hundreds of millions.

But that's a small price to pay for your imaginary "safety," don't you agree?

Maybe we should just lock everything down permanently.

We can never be too safe, can we?

A vender for my company used to take a group of us on charter or party boats once a year out of Belmar NJ for bluefish. I had my own 20 ft fishing skiff out of Long Island NY at that time But the trip out of Belmar was always good. They went out far in the ocean, supplied us with multiple 6foot heroes and beer, soda. (I always tried to get one of the other guys to drive there) and they got us into the BIG gorilla blues. 12 lbs+. Went around 5 years in a row. A good time was had by all. Last time was like 2003. Great fun and a didn’t have to clean the boat and trailer or anything.

Any business owner with half a brain in an industry like that will have insurance coverage that would specifically apply to cases where an employee or customer sues the company over an injury or death in the workplace.

It’s a fishing charter service, for heaven's sake. Do you have any idea what kind of risks people face on a boat like that miles offshore? LOL.

They are out of business now. At least they have a chance if they open. What most people do not see is that when the governments finally lift the shutdowns some businesses will not be able to reopen and of the ones that do up to 50 percent won’t make it even a year before they will go bankrupt ending in a near total loss for the owners and permanent job loss from the employees. The next and long term economic barrier is going to be lack of startups. People with money to start a new business are going to be very hesitant if not totally unwilling to do so now that it has been demonstrated state and local governments can arbitrarily force you to shut down and force your business into bankruptcy. The new business model if you have capital to start a business is going to be, DON’T go into business. Welcome to the new normal.

They’ll have a chance before the lawsuits hit. After that, who knows if they’ll survive.

Don’t post links to articles about business interruption insurance in response to a statement I’ve made about business LIABILITY insurance. I hope you’re smarter than that. These are two completely different types of insurance coverage.

There’s this really cool idea called “signing a waiver”. You should look it up.
