DENVER (CBS4) Top executives at Denver Health Medical Center received significant bonuses this month for their performance in 2019, ranging from $50,000 up to $230,000, one week after frontline hospital workers were asked to voluntarily take leave without pay or reduce their hours as the hospital dealt with the financial downturn resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

They are so not busy that they cut the pay of the staff but then gave the executives their bonuses.
Yah. THAT’s gonna leave a mark!!!
This is the payout of bonuses earned in 2019. Depending on their pay structure, a lot of lower level people are probably eligible for payout of their 2019 bonuses, too.
They certainly were tone-deaf paying these out a week after cutting staff pay. They could have deferred the payout of 2019 bonuses by six months.
Typical of how top administrators in hospitals are paid extra while laying off or cutting hours for the front line workers.
We need to be more sensitive. It’s not cheap getting your wine and caviar delivered and having your Mercedes picked up for service.
A seiously, people this stupid and insensitive to public relations are running the place?
It’s getting talked about, but not enough in my opinion. A lot of hospitals cut back on their services so much that their cash flow disappeared. Not nearly enough patients. So now they cut back workers, and some hospitals may go out of business. That could be a long-term hit to our healthcare infrastructure.
We worried so much about not overwhelming hospitals with too many patients that we ended up decreasing our infrastructure due to too few patients.
None of this played out as they said it would.
Sure, the bonuses were for 2019 performance, however, money is money. If they org doesn’t have enough to pay workers then the execs have done a lousy job and shouldn’t be paid bonuses. Obviously, their 2019 performance has led to shortfalls in 2020. They shouldn’t be rewarded for failure of a long range plan. In other words, “You’ll get your 2019 bonus but not if at the time of payment the finances are in bad shape.”
This was virus all about political control and never about medicine. The polidiots demanded only emergency medicine was to be practiced as though all those other non-emergency department doctors would work viruses patients; not.
They meant to hurt everyone and get everyone’s attention. Totally unconstitutional and worthy of a violent response.
The execs will get hit on their 2020 bonuses (payout April 2021) and bonuses should be ZERO then.
You can’t really retroactively penalize people or change their 2019 goals after the fact. “Oops, we really meant to write a goal for you in January 2019 that you will be prepared for a major pandemic.” Good luck ever recruiting in the future if you do that. I expect there are legally binding performance contracts that spell out the bonus structure. They would are open to huge lawsuits if they changed goals or payouts after-the-fact.
That said, the right thing to do would have been to defer paying out the bonuses. Or perhaps get HR to work with the executive staff and get everybody to agree to voluntary reductions of 50%. Something could have been worked out with the e-staff and line staff.
Why should they get such lucrative bonuses anyways?
Why not give bonuses to the people doing all the dirty work instead of those at the top who are just skimming the cream anyways?
Well at least my wife’s health care employers took a larger pay cut at the management level then at her level due to the loses in elective and non urgent activities.
My wife’s did too. 10% pay cuts across the board.
The big boys will move in and take over. That’s what killing the village to save it is all about. Kill the heath care industry so the bigger ones can take it over.
“Why should they get such lucrative bonuses anyways?”
The claim, and it is false, is that they could start their own companies and compete. Well, screw it, let them. Executive compensation has gotten out of control.
I did not include the six weeks furlough during the remainder of this year.
Since we cannot go out it is meaningless anyway as money is something you need if you don’t die tomorrow.
Same as almost every major corporation. They all do the same thing. We were told by a CEO once they could not off-shore executives because it was an american company as he was off-shoring a lot of other workers.
Nonclinical administrators are the mother of all evil in healthcare. They do not understand patient care although will try to convince you they do. They make decisions that make no sense from a clinical standpoint and likely being far more harm than good.
I can say this having been a C Suite executive and seen it from the inside as a chief medical officer.
The problem is we abdicated our profession when outrageous financial regulations were imposed on us by lawyers who have also ruined our healthcare system.
The term, “bad optics”, was coined for this! Wowww...
Executives get raises and drones get the boot.
SOP in healthcare and government.
Their loyalty is to a. the bottom line for the quarter/year/whatever, and b. meeting the criteria to maximize their own bonuses; long-term health and stability of the business itself be damned.
Does it really surprise anyone that the favorable view of socialism, or at least socialized health care, is on the rise when things like this get out into the public view?
