ussia's Severnoye Design Bureau has stopped development entirely of its Project 23560 destroyers, also known as the Lider class, and the Project 22350M frigate, an expanded derivative of the Project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov class. The company has said these ships are among its most promising future offerings and the halting of the two programs has raised questions about its long-term financial stability.
Russian newspaper Interfax reported the new developments at Severnoye, which is part of the country's state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation, on Apr. 18. The information was reportedly contained in an annual review of the shipbuilder's activities in 2019, which the outlet had obtained.
The Project 23560 project first emerged publicly in 2015, but had reportedly been in development for two years already by then. The Krylov State Scientific Center had been responsible for the actual design, which Severnoye would then build.
The Lider destroyer, also referred to at times as the Shkval, was clearly an extremely ambitious project, perhaps overly so, from the very beginning. Though originally intended to be a conventionally powered warship, plans subsequently shifted to a nuclear-powered design. Its expected displacement also grew from already massive 12,000 to 13,000 tons to 19,000 tons, stretching its classification as a "destroyer."

the Russians were never good at building warships
The USA is a continental power and a naval power.
I would point out that Russia is 5th in the world as listed by coast line.

“Continental powers shouldn’t try to become Maritime powers.”

I will relay that to Admiral Nimitz.
Then: Russia, Russia, Russia...
Now: CHINA, CHINA, CHINA...
They done a good job on the Gorshkov class and will likely increase its missile capacity which is easier to do with VLS. I would not be surprised to see them modify some of their larger surface combatants with VLS launchers too with their smaller but more effective missiles.
Maybe some bargains to be hard. Not great ships but quantity is a quality of its own. Better then letting them go to the Chicoms.
If I remember correctly, it was Alfred Thayer Mahan.
I wonder if they have the same power plant as on that nuclear icebreaker that lost a reactor. If so, there may be fundamental design problems that make their service life close to zero. Better to go with something you know you can get right.
Its all economics. Navies are what you can afford, full stop.
Spain was the premier global maritime power AND the leading European land power for 150 years, because it had the silver mines of Potosi.
Russia’s got an economy the size of Germany’s even measuring at PPP. They are simply not a great power and cannot afford a first rate navy if their Army and Air Force are to be kept remotely competitive.
Most of their coastline is a frozen wasteland in winter. They have, as I recall, just two warm water ports, and of them was leased from former Soviet country Ukraine (hence their hostilities with that nation, that tried to put restrictions on their access and Russia absolutely cannot live with that, no way no how)

Although Russia was instrumental in starting this oil calamity it is hurting them immensely. Right now they can’t afford much.
I think the Russian economy is on par with Mexico
Russia has not been able to afford much for some time. Trump’s policy on domestic oil and gas production foiled Russia’s plans.
Military power comes from economic power. Russia remains a nuclear superpower, but they cannot and will not ever compete with us conventionally. This is why the rise of China is a true military threat. They can field a large modern Army, albeit regionally, unlike Russia.
Their new aircraft are impressive, but research how many they have purchased for their own Air Force and you will be shocked. They are trying hard to sell them, but they cannot afford to buy them themselves.
Those tonnage numbers are cruised weight. The Demoines class was about 18,000 tons.
FWIW, HMS Dreadnought (1906) was also about 18,000 tons...
Yes you are correct.
I wonder if cruisers arent a better idea than over built destroyers.
