Las Vegas Mayor Has an Odd Suggestion About Reopening Sin City

Carolyn Goodman, the mayor of Las Vegas, on Wednesday said she would be willing to offer her city as a "control group" for the Wuhan coronavirus.

"Every one of those lives is a tragic loss but when you count 150 versus 2.3 million, you have to say, 'We have to open up. We have to go back,'" Goodman told CNN's Anderson Cooper. "Our bus drivers, our restaurants –"

"Hasn't it been because of social distancing that the numbers have been what they are?" Cooper asked.

"How do you know until we have a control group? We offered to be a control group," the mayor replied. "Anyone who knows anything about statistics knows that, for instance, you have a vaccine –"

The CNN host interrupted her.

"You're offering the citizens of Las Vegas to be a control group to see if your theory on social distancing works or doesn't work?" Cooper asked skeptically.

Goodman said she offered but was turned down. She rejected Cooper's notion that a control group was a way of seeing if social distancing is effective.

"What I said was I offered to be a control group and I was told by our statistician that we can't do that because people from all parts of southern Nevada come into work in the city. And I said, 'Oh, that's too bad' ..." Goodman said.

The mayor used the idea of the placebo effect to explain her reasoning for offering Sin City up as a control group. In her mind, she said the city could be the "placebo effect" so officials "have something to measure against."

"If casinos reopen are you going to be inside those casinos every single night putting your own life on the line?" Cooper asked.

"I have lived in this town for 56 years –" she replied.

"Are you going to go to casinos every night and put your life on the line like all the workers?" he asked. "You say you were there holding their hands."

"I've been in town," she replied. "They don't need it. We weren't broken. As tragically as the 150 people we lost – tragic – we have 2.3 million people here."

Cooper pressed her again about whether or not she would be in casinos every night.

"What is the purpose of that?" Goodman asked. "First of all, I have a family and I cook a meal every night."

"You're putting your money where your mouth is," the host replied.

so everyone coming in will spend hours in line waiting for a test? You have to have a number of machines and people running them. Until you ask basic questions get a consent signed and run the test that takes 10-15 min so at maximum efficiency you get 4 people per hour per machine/tester through the line. The math just does not add up. And you have exposed everyone in the line outside to those who are sick which is likely more than you will have inside

-- The Abbott Lab quickie is $4500 per machine and $40 for each cartridge. --

Good info. There is likely some overhead cost to administer the test too. Does the cartridge include all the reagents? Maybe some marginal cost for periodic calibration or validation too.

Is the machine freely available, or, like ventilators, only legal to sell to licensed health?

You’re assuming everyone hits the place at the same time. Your hours conclusion is ridiculous.

why would someone want to destroy the US Economy, would that not kind of hamper their cash flow? I have never understood why anyone on top would want the bottom to collapse. I doubt the rich enjoyed the depression in the 1930s, sure I imagine a few folks gained but by and large everyone suffered.

We are in a no win situation with liberals. If you don’t follow every gustapo rule handed out daily and are not paranoid of every measure that is bad, please do not look at anything good cause it might calm your soul....., you are just one of ‘those’ who don’t care about life! And, they don’t mind killing babies and old people!???!!! No matter what, we are wrong and evil. I want to see some real liberals who think the earth is over populated to just let themselves die and their family like they want others to do. Makes NO sense to me.

No. it’s not. it’s actually quite conservative to think each machine could process 4 people per hour. How much lab testing have you been involved with?

My granddaughter is at Brown in RI working on her PHD in Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology. We've discussed this.

She does testing every day and also teaches. She has published.

LV, a control group that would be a hub for cross-communicating the virus between travelers from all over the country.

Meh...Macau casinos have been up and running for quite a while without that happening.

And she thinks you can get more than 4 people per hour per machine through lines? I would be interested to hear how many she thinks each machine can handle per hour and how many employees per machine are needed. I sincerely would like to know what she says

At a cost of 5 k per machine i am guessing they can only run one test at a time. Then someone needs to screen for symptoms obtain the sample get it to the machine. There will need to be a tech or other trained individual to run the machine and report out results then someone needs to get the results to the person tested and either let them in or tell them to go home.

I live in N Nevada.

using the statistics from a couple of days ago, told on the Reno TV station, ABC affiliate, Las had 78% of the positive cases & they had 84% of the deaths.

WHY would anyone wish to open up such a place that has so many travelers from all over the world? Many even come in on private planes.

How does Goodman expect to monitor/control that kind of situation???
