Pizzas could be getting a little heavier, if Dairy Management Inc. has its say in the matter.
DMI CEO Tom Gallagher said the organization, which manages the national dairy checkoff on behalf of 35,000 farmers, is working with several pizza chains on adding 2 additional ounces of cheese to as many pizzas as theyre able to put it on. The effort is one of several initiatives DMI is working on to lessen impacts on farmers due to an oversupply of milk.
Weve got to try a ton of different things, and hopefully they will help, Gallagher said during an April 10 conference call.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S., Gallagher said Dairy Management Inc. has been focused on getting dairy products in hands of people, while continuing to solve problems in the industry and dealing with activists, who he said dont take time off during a global health emergency.
When measures meant to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus began taking shape across the country, panic buying had purchasing of dairy products up by nearly 55%, Gallagher said. Now those numbers are down to closer to pre-outbreak levels, and with 60% of butter and 40 to 50% of cheese sold to the food service industry, which has been making fewer purchases as more people are dining at home, and schools closing down, the dairy industry has been seeing major disconnects between providers and consumers, he said.
Absolutely. Bring on the cheese.
I love cheese. I’ll take all they’ve got.
Veg under the cheese, meat on top. Bring it!
I’d gladly help out with the cheese glut . . . if the good stuff weren’t so darned expensive. A skinny wedge of manchego is $9 at my local Safeway.

Break the record for the world’s largest bowl of nachos, that should get rid of some supply.
We, the government should be doing this now to help seniors/needy and dairy farmers.
We rent crop and pasture land to a local dairy farm. They have been told by their ‘higher-ups’ to cut milk production by 20% as of now.
In turn, we are giving them a 20% reduced rent on the land this season. It’s something tangible we can do to help - and I hope it does! They are an awesome farm family; have been for generations. It’s hard enough watching Wisconsin Dairy farms going under left and right as it is. :(
Poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese
I think it was William Shakespeare’s younger brother Lenny Shakespeare who first said,
Alas, forgeteth not thine cheese fair maiden.
Else, ye should Cheese it!
I grew up poor. We had Free Government Cheese from time to time. My Grandma made the best Mac-n-Cheese from that stuff!
Madison had a huge warehouse facility that stored butter, cheese and meats. It somehow started on fire and melted butter/cheese was literally running down the road, LOL!
The Butter Fire Lessons Learned From Madisons Biggest Blaze

May 3, 2016 marks a significant anniversary in the history of the Madison Fire Department.
It was on this day 25 years ago the Central Storage Warehouse on Cottage Grove Road went up in flames.
Those who lived in Madison at the time will never forget the events of that late afternoon. The fire itself progressed very rapidly and caused a collapse that sent millions of pounds of melted butter and food product into the street, approaching Starkweather Creek.
As firefighters battled the blaze in the days that followed, off-duty personnel were called in, mutual aid from surrounding fire departments was requested, and approximately 3,000 residents within a half-mile radius were evacuated as the fire threatened the facilitys anhydrous ammonia tanks.
The fire wasnt officially declared out until May 11. It was the most significant fire and environmental hazard the city had seen.
Oh, yeah. Families in my dad’s church got “free government cheese” — I think they called it “commodities” or something. It was delicious! And the peanut butter, too.
Please - make some yellow government cheese!
I would gladly buy that stuff. Delicious!

No white cheese at supermarket for Sunday Pasta.
Just saying.
Criminal!
