BOLINAS In the 1970s, this remote seaside village gained a measure of notoriety when the quirky characters who lived here successfully halted new development and became the subject of the book, The Town that Fought to Save Itself.
Now, nearly 50 years later, the Marin County town is fighting to save itself once again this time from the threat of coronavirus. Starting Monday, a privately-funded guerrilla-style operation will be underway to test the entire town of 1,680 people for the deadly virus. Its an extraordinarily rare privilege at a time when most of the country is desperate to get a handle on the extent of infection, but hamstrung by a lack of available tests.
But this time, instead of counterculture hippies taking the lead, its the high-tech multimillionaires including a venture capitalist whose wife founded Flickr, a biotech entrepreneur and the founder of Zynga games who either live or have weekend homes in this reclusive Northern California village an hour north of San Francisco.

The more data, the better.
One would think.
But will they use the increase in cases to keep things shutdown, longer.
What do Trump's federal guidelines say.
Someone I know who works and lives in New Mexico said she will quit her job if they require her to be tested - she doesn’t want anyone tracking her or put her on some list. Plus, she wants to leave NM before they close down the borders. She’s been reading stuff on the Net that sounds like it’s going to be really bad. What say you guys??
Doesn’t matter what Trump wants. Pelosi said test test test.
That means an untested LA tent dweller is unequal to the citizens of Bolinas. In a communist state, inequality is the cardinal sin.
Trump’s fault
Tell her to get a 4x4 and go off road to cross the border.
If you get tested today, what prevents you from getting the virus tomorrow?
She’s a damn fool
“If you get tested today, what prevents you from getting the virus tomorrow?”
Nothing. Idiots have been gaslighted into thinking “testing” is magical and keeps them safe.
Expect the unthinkable in that anyone testing positive will be loaded into cattle cars.
I’d gladly take the antibody test but no way they’re poking that half-foot long swab thing in and through my nose.
Will they be retested after every time they leave the house? Otherwise what good is testing?
What will these elitists do when they find out their neighbor or hired help used by everyone in the community tests positive?
Can they set up a one stop smog check, coronavirus testing center?
Or, next year.
My cousin lived in Bolinas in the 70’s. Went to her wedding there .... no road signs giving directions to Bolinas. Rumor was that the locals were taking the signs down. Looking back after seeing how bringing in too many people do to small towns ... I don’t blame them one bit.
Probably useless for research since it’s not representative of the general population.
If you get tested today, what prevents you from getting the virus tomorrow?

Nothing
This is a point in time snapshot of a single town. What makes this more interesting is that Abbott has apparently also donated antibody testing kits for this as well.
Still only one point in time in one town, but knowing both antigen and antibody status across this population may give us additional information on this virus and its prevalence.
She should dig a deep bunker and go hide in it forever.
Bolinas has been nuts for at least since 1969. One of the first hippie towns. It was okay and then the hippies turned left and it became a total weirdo place. It still is...but a wealthy one. Like most in CA.
“Shes been reading stuff on the Net...”
There’s no more authoritative source of reliable news than “the Net.”
Kudos to this town!
Lack of available tests is arguably the bottom line reason for quarantine imo.
If all passengers in flights to US from foreign countries had worn masks in airports and jets, this might have slowed initial spread of virus.
How does virus first get on hands? Do infected people politely cough or sneeze into own hands but then touch public surfaces?
More isn't always better, for example, speaking of Zynga (high-tech multimillionaires including ... the founder of Zynga games), Words With Friends has so many lights whistles bells, pop-ups, special challenges, awards, custom tile graphics, side contests, events, robo challenges, etc., etc., etc. that it is now practically unplayable.
