Recovery from coronavirus must be just and equitable, pope says

ROME - Pope Francis called on Sunday for an all-embracing vision of the world after the Covid-19 crisis, saying moving on without global solidarity or excluding sectors of society from the recovery would result in “an even worse virus”.

In his homily at the Mass, as well as in his traditional Sunday message afterwards, Francis said the recovery could not leave anyone behind and that now was the time to heal injustice around the world because it undermined the health of the entire human family.

“Now, while we are looking forward to a slow and arduous recovery from the pandemic, there is a danger that we will forget those who are left behind,” Francis said in his homily in the church of Santo Spirito in Sassia, chosen because it is also known as the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy.

“The risk is that we may then be struck by an even worse virus, that of selfish indifference. A virus spread by the thought that life is better if it is better for me, and that everything will be fine if it is fine for me,” he said.

In his noon message immediately after the Mass, he called for “just sharing among nations and their institutions in order to confront the current crisis in a manner marked by solidarity”.

Don’t you wish they had given the same fawning coverage to almost any previous Pope? Why do they do this?

Popes! Is there ANYTHING they don’t know?

I suspect this guy spends more time reading Hallmark cards than the Bible.

Well, technically speaking, he was elected by the College of cardinals of the Catholic Church.

A related rhetorical question might be, why is he accorded such honor and respect by liberals and so many non-catholics around the world?

How do you undo died so as to make it “equitable?”

The answer might not occur to this Pope. The answer is the Resurrection. God has always had this all figured out.

Karl Marx's pope. The recovery won't be equitable because the spread wasn't equitable. For one thing, the data shows older people are more vulnerable as are, what I call, the crowd seekers.

Our local Wally World parking lot is packed like it is Black Friday. I know people who work there. One of them is in the hospital now with the virus and needs all of our prayers.

They deserve as much (or more) credit for going to work everyday as the hospital workers, many of whom are idle because the number of cases is vastly lower than expectations and people needing routine surgeries must put them off. I understand that. But it can't go on forever. When I went to the gym for an early morning work-out, I ran into the same dozen or so people every day.

There are many, many more times that number at Wally World. Our friends who work there say that there are some people who just wander around aimlessly (usually without masks) dazed and confused because they crave the company of fellow humans. You see them every day. I've seen some of this this even in less crowded venues nearby when I go to get my business done and get out a.s.a.p.

Sure, American tax money for US citizens only, jobs for US citizens only. Everyone else leave. Visa workers go home..

I can just imagine him living back when Jesus was healing and teaching. Francis would be chastising the Lord for not being concerned about social justice and the environment.

Those priests who served the people, and died of Covid in Milan and elsewhere in Italy are the real face of the church. The church hierarchy appears to be political more than spiritual. I know of a local priest (young) who is going to elderly parishioners homes and doing home maintenance (painting, carpentry, etc.) and bringing groceries. He is the kind of priest I have the deepest respect and admiration for.
