Melinda Gates said in an interview with BBC Radio this past week that she and her husband, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, had been storing food in their basements for years in anticipation of a pandemic or other disaster.
"A number of years ago, we had talked about, you know, what if there wasn't clean water? What if there wasn't enough food? Where might we go? What might we do as a family?" she said. "So I think we should leave those preparations to ourselves. But absolutely we had prepared and had, you know, some food in the basement in case."

Yeah, I like Tuna, and I like Sardines. I am not really sure how long they last. Stored in a dark cabinet (though they really should be impervious to light inside their cans) - I will eat them either out of necessity or because I enjoy them.
The rice and beans, well, they are dried so should last for ages. And AFAIK, if you eat rice and beans together they synthesize into proteins in the body.
Next door to my office, which is mostly closed but we have a couple of key personnel because we do (in part) an essential service, they are a fulfillment house for Amazon and they’ve loaded us up with protein powder and shake mix and vitamins. I am not 100% certain on the quality of the product (probably synthetics, not ideal but we’re not in dire straits at the moment so I enjoy it regardless) in the mornings we mix up some chocolate flavored protein shakes and take a healthy dose of vitamins C, D, B complex (separate pills).
Reminder to self: ask the neighbor about Zinc and/or Copper supplements.
Sure seems like a lot of these “people” are taking pleasure in letting the “little people” know that they themselves are A-OK...as if their well-being should be accepted, and even applauded, as priority #1.

Meat processing plants are shutting down. I placed an order for pickup at the local Walmart — some common cuts of meat, which were available then, were not in store. Dairy farmers are pouring milk down the drain — meanwhile, powdered milk is nowhere to be found.
Trump and his supporters need to make something clear — the choice between reopening the economy, and continuing lockdowns; isn’t a choice between filthy lucre, and saving lives. It’s a choice between lives and lives. The worst-case scenario for an economic collapse (even just breaking of food chains) is far worse than even the worst-case scenario for the CCP virus.

I saw an interview where a dairy farmer explained that he couldn’t even give the raw milk away & he would have preferred that to dumping it. These supply chains are long, complex and very intertwined. If they start to break, we may not be able to mend them in time to prevent a catastrophe. I’m not panicking about that (yet) — but, I have been taking some small steps to prep.
And exactly what is that address? Road trip, anyone
On reflection, I realize that milk dumping is probably just a thing here, in Canada. The (government-enforced) milk-marketing cartel balances supply and demand by fiat. If demand for milk declines, farmers have to dump it. Demand for milk has declined as restaurants have closed. Is food dumping happening in the USA? Dumping combined with shortages — a truly perverse combination.
I have several months of food in my home. This is nothing new but just common sense. I also live on 9 acres of land with much game. Each year we harvest about 200 lbs of venison. It is delicious. That 200 lbs is shared between I and my neighbor. We could easily increase our kill. That is all we need.
I prepare cheddar cheese, by getting a 40 lb block (about 150 for the extra sharp) and cut it into sizes that work for me. Then you dip them in cheesewax, which you can get at any farm store, or on amazon. There’s youtube videos on the right way to do it. It will keep 25 years without refrigeration.
Canned butter lasts years if stored properly. Wheat, if stored properly, can be kept 25 years, and ground for flour as needed. Powdered yeast will keep for years, if unopened. The older it gets, less and less yeast will “wake” up, so probably get a jar every few years, just in case. Buy sugar, molasses, cooking oil, and salt, in mass quantities, and make sure you store both properly (5 gal food grade pails with lids) Jarred spices are great, but make sure you have seeds for your faves.
I make my own jerky, and can it, with the oxygen absorbers. No telling how long it’ll last, but I’d guess 10 years. No substitute for beans and rice, given how long both can last, as long as you have spices you can add, like mex, cajun, etc. Pasta, Canned tuna, chicken, and even beef are good for years. I have fresh seeds for the plants I’d expect I could grow, and enough canning jars to put up the harvest. Fruit trees, berry bushes of many varieties, and nut trees.
You can harvest acorns, smash them with rocks, and put them in a cheesecloth, or some porous cloth, and soak them in water for at least 24 hrs to get rid of the bitterness (tannic acid). If you soak them a second time in fresh water, they’ll be even less bitter. Then let them dry and grind them for flour. High protein pancakes. Got plenty of snaring supplies, and lead. Plenty more, but these are my off the top of my head ideas for a home pantry. We eat out of it, all the time, so at any given moment, we have at least a years supply of food around.

I saw an article and the dairy farmer said the place he brought his milk to was set up with 10 gallon bags or whatever for restaurants.
“Even if they could be set up for gallon jugs to ship to the stores, there aren’t enough jugs. And the machines that make the jugs? Come from China!”
My idea would be to relax the laws to let restaurants fill up your old milk jug or pail or whatever.
Although here in the Seattle area I haven’t noticed a shortage of milk. Bread seems to be back to normal. Lots of fresh vegetables, but the frozen vegetables are pretty sparce. Although the collard green frozen section was full. My wife says it is awful. Maybe we should try planting some lettuce at least.
