Earth is off to a hot start in 2020.
On the heels of the warmest January in recorded history and the second-warmest February, the planet has now logged its second-hottest March on record, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Thursday.
Its just the latest milestone in what NOAA says is a clear, long-term warming trend. And though there are nine months left in the year, the agencys models are already suggesting that theres a good chance that 2020 could end up as the warmest year since record-keeping began in 1880.
It does look like theres a better-than-half probability that we will finish the year warmest on record, Deke Arndt, chief of the monitoring branch at NOAAs National Centers for Environmental Information, said Thursday in a news briefing about the agencys latest monthly climate report.
The recent temperature records show that even amid natural variations, the planet is continuing to warm at an accelerated pace.
The warm temperatures shrank Arctic sea ice to its 11th-lowest extent, covering 251,000 square miles.
Arctic sea ice tends to expand to its largest footprint over the month of March, Arndt said. This year, it was small.
Long-term warming is a lot like riding on an escalator the longer you stay on the escalator, the higher you go, he said. El Niño is like standing tall and crouching down as youre riding up that escalator. While were not at the stand-as-tall-as-you-can El Niño stage, were not exactly crouching down either.

SECOND warmest. Not the warmest. Could that indicate a trend downward?
Wilder claims have been made on the basis of a lot less information.
“ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1880? That FAR? WOW! Were there still dinosaurs back then? /s”
My Grandfather was born in the 1880’s and I was raised to be a ‘Earth First’ kind of guy.
When we finish logging here we’ll start on the other planets.
I liked the way you said it the first time. There’s global warring here in NC too. Damn plannedemic!
Is this information based on the same exact weather station locations from 1880, without additional weather stations being added or subtracted? Or should I be asking how many thousands of weather stations have been added to the record keeping system since 1880? Or 2006?
Here in a suburb of Omaha, we have 6.5 inches of white climate change dust on the ground. Global warming my ass. I hope it melts off today. I have a tee time on Sunday and I am maintaining what sliver of sanity I have left by playing my white privileged environment destroying favorite game.
They were measuring just fine, until they paved the parking lot.
Things are getting back to normal.
Is this before or after the NOAA "adjusted" the data to fit the model?
Really?
Does anyone with above two digit IQ believe these clowns any more?
This is not worth comments beyond the above sentence.
Define “recorded” history. Tree rings (recorded history) proves this article is a lie. Strata analysis would probably do the same.
good god they have already started with this crap again!
lol
we should all be dead and boiling by now!
I wonder if there could be a connection.
Speaking in Nick Di Paolo’s voice...
“Hey Twang Chow.... Take that global warming shit back to your motherland. Lets see how well they receive your PC nonsense. Probably sell you at a wet market... Oh, my aching stem...”
Central Ohio is having February in April.
“Yeah...and its April 17th and I have frost on my lawn in Pennsylvania this morning. Whats the point?”
We got 16” of snow yesterday and it’s 12 degrees this morning in Longmont, Co.
Its snowing in Indiana as I write this. I’d take a little March warmth right now.
It was 37 in Tulsa this morning. We had snow Tuesday
