New York doctors are seeing marked improvements in COVID-19 patients by utilizing one simple technique: flipping them on their stomachs.
Doctors treating coronavirus patients have begun laying them on their stomachs to help them breathe, a technique known as prone positioning, according to CNN. The practice is particularly effective on patients with COVID-19, caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory system, by increasing the amount of oxygen in their blood by more than 10%.

More like confusing. Why would this work and what made them try it?
I’m just the bearer of good news.
This is something the Italians were doing from the beginning. Not a panacea.
Thank you.
Takes pressure off lungs, I understand...Italy found it useful
I’ve laid a few people on their stomachs but I don’t know if it saved their lives :-)
How about going even further and hanging them from their ankles like bats?
This isn’t the first time they’ve done it. First time the press has taken notice though. I imagine the weight of the body on top of the lungs helps compress the lungs on the exhale, so they can pump more good stuff in on the inhale.
They must have let one roll out of Bed and voila!
LOL!
Being on your stomach has nothing to do with needing more sedation.
The other thing doctors do to help is to reduce the pressure or tidal flow of oxygen. This necessarily causes panic levels of CO2 to stay in the blood, but this prevents air sacs from rupturing from stiffness.
If the patient was left conscious, theyd be ripping out their breathing tube to gloriously suck in desperately needed oxygen (while they actually need most to expel CO2.
This is something a MedCram video described.

= = =
Because this is what docs in Italy were doing....they called it putting the patient in prone position.
We saw the vids, from the overcrowded Italian hospitals, of patient after patient, either on their stomachs, or sitting propped up. Never lying flat on their backs.
I thought of using my inversion table laying face down on it and reclining it for resting and sleeping. It would drain the lungs w/o coughing and allow easier breathing. Just one of the thing I was brainstorming when recovering from mystery flu and pneumonia in March. Covid would be the other shoe dropping so I was thinking ahead.
Haha, great visual!
LOL I need that
Ah, thanks. I wonder how the doctors in Italy thought of doing this, or if it has been done in the past for people in respiratory distress.
"try rolling over"
I'm not knocking doctors, nor am I praising them. The profession (I should say the individual) deserves no more or less respect than a good plumber or engineer or shelf stocker or trash collector or mom or dad ... if they do it well.
I am merely adding to the notion that among many things, Corona has degraded, I think properly, the awe, if not entirely the respect, Americans ascribe to 'experts.'
Some of them may be capable of rocket science, but the makes and breaks with this corona thing quite frankly could all be managed by ... well a good plumber, or engineer or even a bright shelf stocker etc.
Someone in a comment below has it correct. The prone stomach position has the benefit of making it easier for a person in distress to exhale fully thereby more fully expelling CO2. Thus, upon inhaling taking in more needed oxygen.
This is similar to what a ventilator does without the inherent side effects of all ventilators. Though admittedly not as efficient as a ventilator in the ultimate exchange.
There is a FReeper Doc who posted 3+ weeks ago that such patients on their backs was negligence and not proper medical practice.
