U.S. stock futures surged on Thursday night after a report said a Gilead Sciences drug was showing effectiveness in treating the coronavirus. The move pointed to a jump for the stock market on Friday.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 700 points, or about 3%. S&P 500 futures gained 2.8% while Nasdaq 100 futures were up by 1.8%.

Gilead shares jumped by 14% in after-hours trading after STAT news reported that a Chicago hospital treating coronavirus patients with Remdesivir in a trial were recovering rapidly from severe symptoms. The publication cited a video it obtained where the trial results were discussed.

don’t forget the following. read the six comments as well.

16 Mar: Trial Site News: Wuhan Institute of Virology (China) Sought to Patent Gilead’s Remdesivir
Gilead’s experimental drug remdesivir shows possibly the most promise of all experimental COVID-19 vaccine prospects as evidenced by China’s reported possible move, via the Wuhan Institute of Virology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, to patent the drug to treat coronavirus. The experimental drug isn’t licensed or approved anywhere yet, but it surely looks promising. Both remdesivir and chloroquine show promise, according to Chinese authorities...

The Move for a Patent Application
On January 21, it was reported that China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences filed a patent for commercial use of remdesivir in China. Also involved is the Military Medicine Institute of that nation. They sought to secure this patent “out of national interest” and noted they were not interested in enforcement should foreign pharma companies seek to collaborate in China to stop the pandemic. An IP attorney based in Shanghai, China observed that the Wuhan Institute of Virology would be wise to secure approval from the drug’s maker and owner—Gilead.

Remdesivir-based Clinical Trials in China
In one clinical trial, Jin Yin-tan Hospital in WuHan and others are conducting a study sponsored by Capital Medical University and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences for up to 308 patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms. In another study concerning patients with severe COVID-19 conditions, Capital Medical University is sponsoring another study led by professor Bin Cao...

It could be deemed a provocative move for the local Wuhan institute to attempt to patent the Gilead drug without working with them...
https://www.trialsitenews.com/wuhan-institute-of-virology-china-sought-to-patent-gileads-remdesivir/

from memory, Epoch Times documentary on covid suggested a descendant of Jiang Zemin was involved in the attempt to patent remdesivir.

Which politician or funding owns shares in this company?

And they only need to own $32 worth, the New York Times Washington Post daily beast et al went after Donald Trump for puny mutual fund investment.

Trump is announcing guidelines for reopening too.
Probably has more to do with that than one drug.

Yeah, it's an NBC source, so they're going to try and minimize the effect of opening the economy.

What you want to get to is 90% of the 20% who are admitted to hospital.

I suspect remdesivir and hydroxychloroquine will both have a place in treatment regimens for COVID-19.

I would predict hydroxychloroquine (oral drug) will end up as part of the early/outpatient treatment regimens - sort of like Tamiflu is used now for influenza. Remdesivir (intravenous drug) will probably be used as part of the multifaceted treatment regimens in seriously ill hospitalized patients. That assumes current information trends for these drugs continue to look good.

HCQ is also bad because the patent expired and Big Pharma can’t make potentially billions on a generic wonder drug that costs 50 cents a dose.

“This was the first Med they used on patients. Why is there hype now?”
***************************************

This is the normal progression of medical knowledge and studies (simplified).
1. Initial case report - I tried this on a patient and it worked (or didn’t work)
2. Subsequent case studies (series) - We tried this on a group of patients and it worked (or didn’t work)
3. Randomized double blind studies - We gave this to 1/2 the patients and controlled for as many other factors as possible and it worked (or didn’t work). This is the gold standard for whether a drug works or not and how well etc.

As I understand it, this is a preliminary report report on the randomized studies. That it seems to be working is very good news as many (most) drugs fail somewhere through of these steps. Initial case reports and case series is where we are right now with both remdisivir and hydroxychloroquine. This is the next step.

As drug manufacturers speed up their efforts to find a new treatment drug for the coronavirus outbreak that has devastated China and has caused a world-wide panic, a Chinese drug company just announced that it has started mass-producing an experimental drug from Gilead Sciences that has the potential to fight the novel coronavirus (1). BrightGene Bio-Medical Technology, a Suzhou based company (2), just announced that it has developed the technology to synthesize the active pharmaceutical ingredients of Remdesivir, the drug developed by Gilead Biosciences. Its stock price surged 20% in Tuesday morning trading in Shanghai (1). “While BrightGene said that...
