Trump threatens to adjourn Congress to make recess appointments
Washington Times ^ | April 15,2020 | Dave Boyer

President Trump threatened on Wednesday to take the unprecedented step of adjourning Congress with his executive powers so he can make recess appointments of stalled nominees.

Speaking at the daily White House coronavirus task force briefing, Mr. Trump said his administration has been hamstrung by a lack of personnel because Senate Democrats have held up nominees.

He criticized the Senate and House for holding “phony” pro forma sessions, instead of adjourning, which prevents him from making recess appointments.

“Will it?”

That depends on what the Democrats do. They could stop playing games and the president would not have to adjourn Congress.

Democrats will probably want to provoke the president and then direct the media to scream bloody murder.

The president has put down his marker; I don’t think he is kidding. He could be. I hope not.

That is not quite the same. Congress was not technically adjourned. Obama ignored the pro forma sessions and said the pro forma sessions really weren't sessions. The Supreme Court did not agree with Obama.

Trump's action would be different.

Because not everyone believes conspiracy theories and no one has offered any proof after all these many years. I must have read thousands and thousands of the same accusation here, but I have not seen any proof, just yahoos ranting.

Especially since his wife is Chinese and may have the Communist Party connection. I still don’t trust McTurtle.

And who’s going to tell on Mitch? Certainly not anyone in congress who have their own little China nest-eggs going. Sometimes it helps if you’re willing to connect a few simple dots.

There’s been plenty of stories in the alternative media about Mitch and his wife’s China connections, but lots of the mainstream media are practically on China’s payroll. They’re payed off to keep quiet about it. If you’re waiting to hear it from Fox news or any of the other outlets than you’re in for a long wait.

Stay curious and keep an open mind my friend. Remember, when things just don’t add up then there’s always ‘other’ math involved.

You’re completely right. There’s no unilateral power to adjourn in that clause, unless the houses have a disagreement. In this case both houses have cheerfully held phony baloney pro forma sessions and, indeed, pretended to constitutionally pass multi trillion dollar legislation.

Don’t threaten Mr. President. Just do it.

He has to set the table first. He also has to allow Pelosi time to "do the right thing." Announcing he's thinking of doing it gives everyone time to digest it so when does it it's not looked upon as legitimately shady or seizing power.

I hope somebody in the administration read my post, lol. I just said the other day Trump should use his constitutional power to do it.

Send Nancy Peelosi back to San Francisco (or rather ultra-rich Marin county) for a while.

It was illegal - Separation of Powers - and when Obama did it and the Senate sued and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court, Obama lost 9-0 - his illegal recess appointments were declared null and void, as well as any and all actions they took while they were illegally in office. It was one of the most frightening power grabs in history - do we not remember that?

Completely different. Obama tried to do it without full adjournment. Trump has the legal authority if both houses disagree on adjournment. All Trump has to do is work with Mitch to have the Senator adjourn and if the house doesn’t agree, then Trump adjourns both.

Indeed - it is totally outrageous McConnell doesn’t exercise powers he doesn’t and can’t have.

It was McConnell who stopped the Senate from going into recess while Obama was President to block his recess appointments, and Harry Reid was powerless to stop this, and of course we cheered it then, but now, ha! It’s his fault the Senate can’t go into recess - supposedly he has more powers than Reid had when he was majority leader.

Seriously, don’t make stuff up. It doesn’t take long with just a cursory amount of research to find this out - but you should be politically savvy enough already given the things have been discussed here over the years to already know that. McConnell himself has already used the nuclear option multiple times to speed things along in spite of the unprecedented level of obstruction - pretty huge news each time it happened. How did you miss that? Seriously.
