New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell today said she does not expect any large events to take place in the city for the remainder of 2020.
While discussion has begun about how to re-start the economy and more normal activities when the coronavirus pandemic ends, the mayor said it is likely that a certain amount of social distancing will continue for some time, and she said that will have an impact on a lot of New Orleans events.
"My recommendation is absolutely no large events such as French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest, even Essence Festival, as it relates to the year 2020," Cantrell said. "The focus should shift to 2021."
The mayor said she has spoken about it to organizers of some events, and said "from a collaborative manner, you'll see signs of change."
Cantrell said she has not talked to representatives of the NFL or NBA about how that might affect the Saints or Pelicans seasons, but said she expects the leagues and team owners are as concerned about the health and safety of players and fans as she is.
Dear Mayor,
Perhaps you are correct. But without those events your city will suffer an economic disaster that will make it look like a virtual Katrina hit it, but without the physical damage.
Time to start figuring out how to more safely make these events happen rather than taking the lazy way out.
Just saying.
This is the same incompetent who blamed Trump for her refusal to cancel Mardi Gras.
Ahh, all these grand plans. No large events - okay, so what are you going to do about the tens of millions of dollars you’re wiping away from room taxes? Sales taxes (if they collect that there..) And how will property taxes work out now that you’re intentionally devaluing the properties?
These are decisions the city will come to deeply regret. And I’m really glad I’m not in the hospitality sector right now.
Hypocrites within the Dem. Party have large numbers.
I wonder how the businesses in the French Quarter feel about this...to much more of this economic depression that’s been imposed on us and places like the French Quarter may never come back...
LaToya??? Really?? Where are the MEN that people should follow??
In other words- "Please save me from myself!"
Nice work, bankrupted city!!! I’ll have a muffaletta with that!
Move the festivals outside the city limits. Move the 8 home games of the Saints to a college stadium outside of New Orleans. Problem solved...
This is the same vagina that decided to allow the bodies of crushed victims in that hotel building rubble to remain in place till after Mardi Gras!
I think that a few bone-casting shops on Royal St. might be doing some workings
“...will suffer an economic disaster...”
Nah. Uncle Sam will bail them out, again.
The printing presses are humming along nicely.
These POS are drunk with this new found power that we willingly gave them! Decisions made out of fear and hysteria are never good ones! We are going to regret giving these A$$wipes this type of power for generations!
Once again; stupid is as stupid does. I wish stupid hurt. It really should.
2020; the year in New Orleans that wasn’t. Or; how to destroy the economy of a city in one easy step.
They have a Mayor Latoya? That’s really messed up.
