WASHINGTON — As the White House debates when and how to reopen the economy, one emerging argument is that an extended shutdown could pose a more dire long-term health threat to the United States than the coronavirus itself.
Peter Navarro, the White House trade adviser who is now coordinating the country’s medical supply chain, is warning that a prolonged shutdown of nonessential commerce could result in a broad range of negative health effects that he contends medical experts are ignoring in their efforts to flatten the curve of coronavirus cases.
“It’s disappointing that so many of the medical experts and pundits pontificating in the press appear tone deaf to the very significant losses of life and blows to American families that may result from an extended economic shutdown,” Mr. Navarro said in an interview with The New York Times.
“Instead, they piously preen on their soap boxes speaking only half of the medical truth without reference or regard for the other half of the equation,” he said, “which is the very real mortal dangers associated with the closure of the economy for an extended period.”

Absolutely. Families and businesses going broke leads to depression and suicide and long term negative health effects. People won’t be able to afford co-pays or insurance premiums and will avoid getting health care. Possible food shortages and price spikes could cause malnutrition. People might turn to crime to feed their families.
I do believe it won’t take a long shut down to cause collateral health damage to far exceed the virus itself.
I really like Navarro.
He is saying what I have been saying all along. Too bad it took so long to get out, and too bad he hasn’t had the sway of Zachary Smith.

A doc, on Ingraham’s show tonight, said pretty much the same.
He said....Dr Fauci may be a great scientist, but, he’s not a doc treating the whole patient....physically, mentally, spiritually, etc.
He said depression can be as deadly - or more - than the virus.
Agree.
Navarro has been on it, as much, or more than ANYONE, since day one.

Peter Navarro knows what is coming.The first bad economy that I remember was the 1973 oil shock then the Jimmy Carter depression. This has all of the ingredients of something much worse.
Everywhere except NYC, New Orleans and Detroit should open now.
I knew Peter, back when he was in San Diego, and he is a good guy.
He’s not two weeks too late. He and Mnuchin and our President have been concerned about this for several weeks now.
Anyone paying attention would know this. It is the REASON President Trump said a few weeks ago the Cure cannot be Worse than the Disease at one of the afternoon updates weeks ago.
They are chomping at the bit to release our businesses but, the Medical Experts were producing models and charts and graphs predicting CATASTROPHE. Hundreds of THOUSANDS of DEAD AMERICANS.
So, Doom and Catastrophe had to be factored into the equation. Now that those Models have proven to be complete BS.
The Medical Doomsayers are losing influence. In-fact the Medical Doomsayers are backing off of their dire predictions and are starting to make excuses for their BS predictions. So, we are on a path back to business.
But, the Wuhan Virus is real and hotspots are real so, some thought and calculation must be factored into our return to business.
Because if he said something two weeks ago it would have made all the difference in the world. Two weeks ago everybody was predicting a million deaths except sane people here and other places.
Better watch out...a machine mind might turn us all into human batteries but building a perfect world..so to speak for our minds..

Considering that Fauci doesn’t run the Coronavirus Task Force, much less tell Trump what to do, the answer is “no”.
Fauci is just the spokesman selected by the committee to talk to the press. He’s one of 22 members and not even the senior medical officer. He doesn’t run anything.
The Coronavirus task force has plenty of economic people on it. Mnuchin, Kudlow, Grogan, Kan. Navarro isn’t a member but he probably sits in.
