Americans Need To Start Pushing Back Against Draconian Lockdowns
The Federalist ^ | 13 April 20 | Molly McCann

Posted on 04/13/2020 9:51:53 AM PDT by Bruiser 10

On April 11, The Washington Post ran an article about plans being made to reopen the economy. The article complains that state governors (rather than the White House) are leading the planning, which has resulted in a “mind-boggling level of disorganization,” according to a Centers for Disease Control director.

The incessant bleating of prominent health leaders over the lack of federal control in this crisis only underscores how little they understand or respect this country’s Constitution and the freedoms it seeks to protect. Although the White House certainly has emergency authority to mandate all number of efforts to respond to crisis, and obviously can pressure local leaders, the coronavirus has highlighted the structural nature of the Constitution and that one of the saving graces in the insanity we are living through is that lockdowns are local.

Our country’s structure is pretty straightforward on paper, even if things get a little complicated once all the parts start moving in real time. When the states formed the Union, they ceded power to a federal government cautiously, carefully granting to Congress enumerated powers and creating checks and balances to keep the federal government from evolving into tyranny. At least, that was the plan.

The states retained their historic “police power.” The police power is a state’s inherent authority to govern with a view toward its citizens’ health, safety, morals, and general welfare. Certainly, a state’s plenary powers are limited by the U.S. Constitution and state constitutions, but absent those restrictions, a state’s power is very broad.

Time to start enforcing the Constitutional Rights that we are being robbed of in the name of “safety”.

‘It will not come back if people are to scared to be around more than ten people..’

yep, that’s when we find out how much lethal damage these lockdowns have caused; right now, people are even afraid to look at each other in the supermarkets, and if you’re walking on a sidewalk and someone’s coming the other way, they will go out to the middle of the street to avoid you; how people have become so cowed by a natural phenomenon that has existed for millenia and can come at any time in their lives is remarkable to me; prudence and diligence is one thing, cowering in our basements and avoiding outside contact is another...

Not a joke.

Over the past two days my county’s 911 radio had calls for such bravo sierra as “people doing roofing and there are SIX of them”; and “20 people in the store without masks and one of them was coughing”.

OK, the cougher might be a little serious but how does the busybody tattletale know that it isn’t seasonal pollen allergies?

There are four guys building a garage on my property right now. There is no “social distancing” going on. I even shook hands with three of them when they first got here. This virus has had zero impact on my lifestyle, except getting to work from home, saving 3 commute hours per day and a tank of gas every two days. :)

This is a great article and exactly right.

A dangerous precedent is starting now. It needs to end and a consensus should be reached that this heavy-handed, one-size-fits-all shutdown must not be repeated.

The author is also correct that the governors should open up their states no later than May 1.

If the president wants to open the country back up on May 1, shouldn’t the administration begin presenting a plan? Busiensses need time to plan a restart and we are only two weeks away.

They need to test enough to get a good representative sample to convince themselves that the models were crap.

I feel sorry for the author. It’s clear she’s accustomed to enlightening people with facts and reasoning. That was the America of 50 years ago. Today most people have the public IQ of a dog. They are constantly shouted at by their MSM masters. They are deaf to soft spoken reasoning.

From March 13th until this past Good Friday, I didn’t leave my home by car at all. Nor did anyone in my household. I got all groceries delivered. I left the house only once a day on foot to walk the dog around the neighborhood. I’m in CA. My husband and I think we got Covid in mid-late Feb. We both coughed for weeks, I had a fever, and my kids got nothing (typical for Covid).

I kept strict adherence to the “15 days to slow the spread” in late March but was discouraged when Pence added on “30 days to slow the spread” through April and beyond and it always seems to be day 1 of 30.

So this past weekend we are finally going out a bit more, to the hardware store, etc. Enough is enough. I see others slowly doing the same. I agree with you about dribs and drabs.

If it’s safe to buy groceries, it’s safe to return to work with proper precautions.

“I believe DJT is acting responsibly and that the economy will come roaring back once he opens things up. Why on earth would anyone allow the intentional destruction of our economy if they feel it’s unnecessary?”

DJT had no choice. He is “damned if you do and damned if you don’t.” Look how he is being crucified by the media now — even when he is doing exactly what the libs want (shutting everything down).

If he can get the stimulus funds out the door from the CARES act that was passed on 3/27 and that was scheduled to be implemented a week later on 4/3, he might salvage this mess. There is talk that payments for individuals are going out, but for the businesses that have been shut down, it is a disaster! There is NO funding in sight.

I believe we will see one today or tomorrow.

According to Pres. Trump’s latest tweet, which ended with the following:

“...the Administration and I are working closely with the Governors, and this will continue. A decision by me, in conjunction with the Governors and input from others, will be made shortly!”

the governors should have opened their state on April 1, but that was not going to happen, and I’m afraid that May 1 is not happening either, except maybe some dribbles of construction work in the less impacted areas...June 1 at the earliest, and some places, much longer...

In the People’s Republic of Minnesota a small town tavern was busted for allowing four patrons to play cards in defiance of Generalissimo Governor Walz’s shutdown order. These same individuals could however be interacting at the local feed store, hardware store or grocery with loosely enforced social distancing.
