As More Oregonians Lose Their Jobs, the State’s Food Pantries Warn They’re Poised to Run Low on Supplies

...For the past three weeks, Blanchet House has seen record numbers of people seeking meals. In the first week of April, staff and volunteers (the kind Kerman says would "fight through zombies to get to our door" to help) served 9,700 meals—nearly double the numbers from the first week of March. The first week of the month is typically a time when the number of meals needed decline as public benefits become available at the start of the month...In the past, more than three-quarters of the food Blanchet House served was donated. But now restaurants are closed and don't have excess to contribute. Blanchet House must also now package its food instead of serving it restaurant style. Both those factors have increased costs from 33 cents to $5 a meal.

I imagine food pantries got a lot of donations from restaurants back when restaurants used to exist. Now the people who used to work at these restaurants and deliver their excess food to the food pantries are a large part of the people who are lining up to get food from them.

Sure, people will go hungry and suffer the ravages of malnutrition and perhaps starvation. But at least they won’t die of the By Russ.

It’s not just Oregon. I live in a state with a Republican governor. At one food distribution site that used to get 500 cars full of people drive up before this shamdemic, they now are getting 4000.

Actually, the comments at the end of the article by Oregonians are not too kind to the governor.

CRISIS!!!!!!!!!!It’s the liberal gift that keeps on giving. If America acted like this in crisis in the past,we would have no country.

“They’ll still vote rat, anyway.”

That has been historic for stupid Oregon voters to put in dims and then can’t figure out why the state does the opposite of what is good.

My prayer is for a revival of Christianity in this fairly Godless state.

Not much sympathy, people should have a store of food in their house to be able to stay home for a couple months without needing more than maybe eggs and milk. Even then there’s powdered milk and other substitutes. To piercing to see people having a good bag for food after a couple days. No excuse.
