Laffer said in a recent interview with Just the News that the government's widespread shutdown of society to slow the spread of coronavirus was medically necessary and fit within "reasonable limits," but reopening the economy should be based on calculated, fact-based risk rather than irrational, widespread fear
"Let me tell you how I feel," Laffer said. "Now I'm 80. I've got six children, 13 grandchildren, and I have four great grandchildren. Really cool people. People I love more than life. I am perfectly willing to accept the higher risk of mortality, of dying, if I can feel better about their economic futures going forward. I do not want to sacrifice their opportunities going forward, just to have me live another week. We have to be very careful about the tradeoffs and make damn sure you dont ruin the countrys future. That's what smart people do
"Everyone is suffering from this pandemic, all the way across in economics, in physical terms, family cohesion," he said. "Child abuse is way up, suicides are way up. There are all sorts of ways this virus is doing a hell of a lot of damage to our society and to our economy. They have a perfect right, role and responsibility to respond to that pandemic."

Laffer is on Hannity RIGHT NOW!
My guess is that Laffer will do a repeat on Hannity-Fox TV tonite.
Keep in mind Trump is no spring chicken himself.
And he has left his family a prosperous businesses etc. He has wisdom in this regard to what he wants for his children, grandchildren ...and our younger generations. I wouldn’t be surprised if behind closed doors in the dark of night he doesn’t have similar thoughts.
See the message started out as saving our most vulnerable, but did anyone ask them what they wanted us to do? It isn’t a suicide pact, but if you have older family members or you are older you most likely have a “living will.” In it states ...no heroic measures or save me at all costs. Most older folks choose the first option. Not rushing to deaths door, but fully cognizant of their health. And in full realization that option 2 could leave family with huge debts. And they admittedly don’t want that for their family.
We have put the entire country into heroic measures. The coming devastation is quite visible at this point and I for one don’t want that for the next generation to struggle through.
Proverbs 13.22 says, A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children...”
I think you make an excellent point. Why aren’t we hearing from experts on plans to target testing so that we know where it will be safe to open up areas for business again? The expression of wishes and hopes that businesses will be opened up by a particular date is not helpful. What are the paths being explored?
What age do you consider elderly?
Laffer’s position sends hundreds of thousands of his peers to their grave fighting for air. Way too many people are taking this pandemic as about THEMSELVES. It’s not about one’s self. It is about the thousands and thousands of others you infect by being out an about.
Of course it is, on paper. That's because the Federal government gives a hospital a lump sum payment to help defray the cost of having treated anyone who dies of the virus.
Add to that incentive to lie the fact that equipment given to States by the Federal government will become property of the State (charged to them as used equipment) once the pandemic is declared over and there's no way I believe that hospitals looking at both direct financial lump sum payments and free equipment aren't calling a lot of deaths from other things deaths due to this virus.
JMHo
I could be considered “elderly”, I suppose-no one props me up, no one ever has-I’m healthy, organic diet, drug-free naturalist-I work full time managing my best friend’s construction business, and we are out of work due to this virus-I want/need to be on a jobsite, earning money-and there are plenty of people my age who work for themselves instead of golfing at the Villages or Dell Webb, sitting on the patio with grandkids etc-.
We want to get back to work-and those of us who have been doing our own grocery shopping have likely been exposed, and had few or no symptoms of the virus-most of us probably have some sort of immunity by now unless we are taking prescription drugs, have diabetes, are obese, etc-we’re part of the healthy herd of business owners and workers...
It's not the feds keeping people from work and it won't be the feds getting them back to work.
No but Fedzilla employees should not be getting a paycheck so long as barbers, waiters and carpenters are on the sidelines.
I believe the Libs call it “fairness”.
Life is a risk. We’re even seeing here on FR how many snowflakes there are among us.
This comment is going to get me branded as a heatless, cruel blood sucking merchant of death, but here it goes.
Even IF the worst-case scenario of 2.2 million dead were true (and it’s bullship):
2.2 mil. \ 350 mil. = .0063%
That’s a statistical blip. Where we are headed the actual number will be .00017%.
That’s not to devalue ANY individual human life, but come on!
Isn’t that 0.63 percent?
People are going to die, you don’t shut don’t a nation for 60,000!
I divide 2.2 by 350 and my calculator says .0062857.
I’m not going to cower in my basement over a .00017 chance I could die from this.

Nonsense. Get off your knees and live like an American.
I’m not saying do nothing. I fully support strict precautions on nursing homes. It wipes people out in muliples in those places. If you have pre existing conditions that put you at risk you probably should stay home. But this lockdown of everybody is absurd.

Another sniveling whining sheeple believing all that the lying bureaucrats feed him.
“get off your knees and live like an American.” Sir, that train pulled out of the station when the media panicked and then stampeded the sheep. That is not going to happen.
