Reagan adviser Laffer 'willing to accept the higher risk' of dying from coronavirus to open economy
Just the News ^ | April 9, 2020 - 8:39pm | By Carrie Sheffield

Laffer said in a recent interview with Just the News that the government's widespread shutdown of society to slow the spread of coronavirus was medically necessary and fit within "reasonable limits," but reopening the economy should be based on calculated, fact-based risk rather than irrational, widespread fear

"Let me tell you how I feel," Laffer said. "Now I'm 80. I've got six children, 13 grandchildren, and I have four great grandchildren. Really cool people. People I love more than life. I am perfectly willing to accept the higher risk of mortality, of dying, if I can feel better about their economic futures going forward. I do not want to sacrifice their opportunities going forward, just to have me live another week. We have to be very careful about the tradeoffs and make damn sure you don’t ruin the country’s future. That's what smart people do

"Everyone is suffering from this pandemic, all the way across – in economics, in physical terms, family cohesion," he said. "Child abuse is way up, suicides are way up. There are all sorts of ways this virus is doing a hell of a lot of damage to our society and to our economy. They have a perfect right, role and responsibility to respond to that pandemic."

Sooner or later the bottom line will be the bottom line. Cost benefit ratio.

From what I see and hear from ordinary folks (outside the beltway), almost everyone is ready to go back to work (except the lazy asses that didn’t want to work anyway).

Life is a series of risk/benefit analysis.

You can hide in your basement and never go for a drive and never get on a plane and still be at risk from falling down at home.

Or you can go back to life and risk running across a germ that by any REASONABLE statistics poses minimal risk.

You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Trump should suspend ALL Federal employee pay until the last hairdresser gets called back to work.

That would end this quicker than you can say Beemer Payment.

I am an old geezer with children and grandchildren too, and I agree with that message 100%.

Should be repeated often.

Nice post, Patriot.

Me too......I'd rather die this summer of the virus while doing the things I love outdoors than die in my home after being denied the things I love........

I had a similar conversation with my youngest son (father of my three grandchildren) about 3 weeks ago. Essentially, I told him that if the price of a few extra years of life for me were poverty and enslavement of his family and all of my posterity, the price would be far too high (I am 70 and still working). Any grandparent who feels differently is a pretty horrible grandparent.

Look, we can all be a whole lot safer if we just lock ourselves in a closet, right? But at some point people are going to have to venture out and take some risks. The “cure” is becoming far worse than the disease.

People die, most of them old and/or with other underlying ailments; you can’t save everyone while destroying even more people in the process. I am right in the category of those most at risk, older, I have co-morbidities (what an awful concept); I’m right in the ballpark of one who if infected could have a very bad go of it. But I refuse to whine, I have absolutely no desire to ruin our Country for the rest of us in order to save my own hide. I’ll take that risk in order that the Country as a whole doesn’t sink into a Great Depression, with all of its attendant problems, both physical and mental.

Good grief folks, stiffen up those spines and stop being led around by the nose by the “alleged” experts such as Fauci and Birx who are Clinton/Obama lovers with an agenda, and a bunch of models that are proven wrong over and over again. While the MSM/Dems/fascists scare the heck out of what is an increasingly willing to be led around by the nose populace. I for one refuse to subscribe further to such submissive cowering. I will fight for our freedom from those that are using the coronavirus as an excuse to terrorize, bully, and misuse their power in order to control and further subjugate us.

This is not the America I know and love. Time to fight back and retrieve our dignity and sanity against those that would destroy our way of life. There are those amongst us that do not have our best interests at heart while they pretend that they do. Practice further self deception at the risk of you and your Country’s peril.

I hear ya. Both of my sons have excellent jobs in the private sector and I really fear for those jobs. One son works in the medical devices field and with all elective surgery shut down so goes his bonuses. Fortunately he’s also on salary so he can support his family. My youngest son is in the tech field and his wife just told me that many of his competitors are being let go. So far he’s safe but for how long?
My daughter’s husband works for a private school (not a teacher) and they can’t afford to let him go. All 7 of my grandkids are really feeling the brunt of this shutdown, especially the oldest one. He’s a high school senior and his year is gone.
I don’t eve know if he will have a graduation, because he’s at a private school, a good number of his classmates are from all over the world.

This 82 yr old with a heart condition agrees with Laffer. We can take care of ourselves. We’re retired and don’t have to go anywhere. I’ve learned how to order groceries over the internet and then I drive up to the store and they put the groceries in the back of my car. I can do this as long as necessary.

A grocery store is the last place I want to go.

It sure does. I live in New York, my brother lives in New York city, supposedly the most infected state and city, more infected than even other countries yet we don’t know anyone who has this virus and my brother knows a ton of people. This thing reeks a little too much as a scam to get the Treasonists everything they ever wanted: A destroyed economy putting everyone on the government teet, it destroys two of Trumps running platforms - the record setting economy and jobs, it gives government leverage to act totalitarian, it gives the Treasonists unlimited ammunition to attack Trump. Something just really stinks here. Why not this attention when other pandemics hit us? Today I read in the NY Post the virus is now the #1 killer in the country, more than cancer and heart attacks. I know 4 people who died of heart attacks and one cancer since last February (I’m old). I don’t know anyone who died from this virus much less anyone who even has it.
