Images have emerged of coffins being buried in a mass grave in New York City, as the death toll from the coronavirus outbreak continues to rise.
Workers in hazmat outfits were seen using a ladder to descend into a huge pit where the coffins were stacked.
The location is Hart Island, used for New Yorkers with no next of kin or who could not afford a funeral.
New York state now has more coronavirus cases than any single country, according to latest figures.
The state's confirmed caseload of Covid-19 jumped by 10,000 on Thursday to 159,937, of whom 7,000 have died.
The drone footage comes from Hart Island, off the Bronx in Long Island Sound, which has been used for more than 150 years by city officials as a mass burial site for those with no next-of-kin, or families who cannot afford funerals.
It is probable that many of the coffins are for coronavirus victims, but it is not clear whether they fall into the above categories.
Burial operations at the site have ramped up amid the pandemic from one day a week to five days a week, according to the Department of Corrections.
Prisoners from Rikers Island, the city's main jail complex, usually do the job, but the rising workload has recently been taken over by contractors.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio indicated earlier this week that "temporary burials" might be necessary until the crisis had passed.
"Obviously the place we have used historically is Hart Island," he said.

About 40 coffins were buried on Thursday

Hart Island off the Bronx is being used for temporary interment
what about China?
Nothing says Gov Cuomo is doing a great job on the Chinese virus like mass graves.
Crematories running 24/7.
I just dont see why the hurry to bury in a wrong place, there must be plenty of refrigerator rail cars available.
This is the Potters Field, in other words, where they bury indigent people with no family who were found on the streets, jails, shelters, etc. This suggests that a number of the deaths have been among the homeless, whose bodies are held why they attempt to find next of kin and then buried in one of the citys Potters Fields.
Also, they are not even testing to see if people found dead on the street actually had COVID but are assigning all deaths (unless its something obvious like a gunshot) to COVID.
Amazing how deaths in other categories over the same period have dropped...hospitals get like $39k government $ if they label it CV19...Rush covered this yesterday. Truth out.
If you just looked at the headline, you'd think MILLIONS died in Noo Yawk. Hart Island has been used as a burial ground for the indigent for 15 DECADES. Of course, the media knows most people just read the headlines.
“de Blasio indicated earlier this week that “temporary burials” might be necessary until the crisis had passed.”
Other than a mention of “might be necessary”, I didn’t read where this is actually the case.
Shark jumping on this one. Stay on the story. Demand details. Peel the onion. It will become unraveled as a staged photo op event.
They are using the island cemetery as a holding site for bodies (they often do this, every body is filed and tagged, then temporarily buried until other arrangement can be made, the bodies disinterred and sent to appropriate final services with families if found. Unclaimed bodies are permanently buried.)
Better pictures than during the last ‘SuperFlu’ when the ‘World Was Shocked’ photos came out.
Potter’s Field has a couple of hundred years of mass graves and unknown/unloved corpses.
Why not burn piles of bodies in the streets? It would have more of a media effect.
Been doing this on Hart Island for 150 years.

Number of burials is up considerably. But mass haves are kinda their thing.
That is what responsible preparations look like. Not enough money in it for everyone without mass graves.
A city that large who couldnt bury 7000 people is a symbol of failed leadership. But it makes great tv and gets federal taxpayer dollars.
I think these recent burials are not “temporary” but are forever and are unclaimed or poor people. I was looking at google earth and these types of trenches are visible back to 2007 in other areas. A trench from 2018 showed a trench with the plywood over the caskets. And the white pipes sticking up in the video are probably vents to release the gases (methane?) from the decomposing bodies.
Google earth showed the area in 2000 or so to have the old buildings and all over grown with large trees. Now to go see what the history of Hart Island is. Old hospital? Asylum? I bet there are youtubes of people exploring the old buildings.
Making up more bullsh##, harts island has been used for decades as a burial site so its not like The death toll is such that we are running out places to bury the dead.
This is no different than it used to be, except the volume is higher. That won’t matter to the doomers, though, it’s the end of the world to them.
