Sacramento-based publisher The McClatchy Co. is furloughing about 115 employees at 30 newspapers across the country to cut costs during a period of slow ad sales due to the pandemic.
Nearly all the furloughs will be in advertising departments, and no news positions are being furloughed, said McClatchy (AMEX: MNI) spokeswoman Jeanne Segal.
Some 4.4% of the workforce will take a COVID-19 leave for 90 days, Segal said. But we will work hard to bring everyone back sooner as advertising rebounds.
The company, which publishes the Sacramento Bee, is also laying off four executives, according to a letter to employees, provided by McClatchy. One of those executives is Gary Wortel, West region lead and president and publisher of The Sacramento Bee.

Whhhaaaahhh.
Who will write the daily lies?
A couple of weeks ago the Bee ran an angry, ranting column by Gil Duran, editorial page editor, blasting Trump for wanting to reopen the economy - saying Trump wanted to kill grandma for Wall Street.
But it’s not Wall Street where the jobs are dying. It’s Main Street - and at newspapers like the Bee, which rely on ads from Main Street businesses.
It doesn’t look like Gil lost his job in this round of cuts, but the Bee publisher who presumably allowed Gil to write his rant, is out.
Who will write the daily lies?
It looks like they just furloughed ad people, not writers - yet.
That’s only 4 employees per newspaper. Doesn’t seem like much of a cut.
I guess they’ll just have to learn to code.
Remember a couple weeks ago when Pelosi was trying to give them MANY millions of dollars of taxpayer money to bail them out?
I guess they didn’t get it yet, but Pelosi will keep trying to sneak it in, I reckon.
Company or Cartel?
They want their bailout. The Dems are trying to get it for them.
I do not feel sorry for them.
Couldn’t happen to to a nice company who owns the KC “Red” Star.
Die you egg sucking pigs!
Something cheerful for hard times.
That will work out like getting amnesty or mail in voting, I reckon.
Well a very bright spot in all of this!!!
Nice the ads are gone how will they have the revenue to pay people wont be long!!!
I’ve noticed newspapers who advocate giving away all kinds of free stuff during this pandemic still have their paywalls up.
Get rid of the dead wood but it doesn't read like that is what has happened here.
