Never make yourself the main subject of the story.

But his criticisms were every bit as unprofessional for virtually identical reasons.

And if Modly didn't think his comments weren't going to get into the media then he was either stupid or incompetent himself.

Name calling should be reserved to the Commander in Chief.

Of course President Trump gets a lot of flak for his name-calling, but he's good at it. The country would be better off if all the other name-callers would shut up.

Trump can’t have a Secretary of the Navy that engages in name calling.

I probably would have put a </sarcasm> tag on that.

The Captain was not stupid for writing the corona virus letter. He was stupid for sending it through unsecured channels to 22 people, many of whom were not within his chain of command.

Clearly the captain intended for the memo to apply public pressure to his chain of command.

Also, did you know his superior officer, Admiral Stuart Baker was on the ship at that time? Crozier could have just walked into his office and voiced his concerns to the Admiral. He didn't. He chose to make a circus out of it.

It’s probably a good idea to put a WARRIOR in charge of the Department ‘formerly known as” WAR

It also cannot be good to allow the crew to so greatly disrespect a decision by the Secretary of the Navy to relieve their captain for just cause.

The Crew needed to understand that the Captain had done wrong, and that it was not okay for him to get away with it. The secretary used some intemperate words, but his message was correct. The Captain had done wrong.

I wonder if Modly even sees the irony - he busted out Capt. Crozier for going public, outside of the chain of command with his concerns.

Modly didn't go public. Members of the crew secretly recorded him, and *THEY* went public.

I found out that Modly didn't use the chain of command because the chain of command balked at relieving Crozier of his command. Modly was apparently the first person in the chain of command to come to the right decision.

Esper is a West Point grad, a member of the 101st Airborne during the first Gulf War, holds the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman's Badge. He left the Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. Isn't that a WARRIOR?

how did any of the internal communication and decisions get to the press anyway, that doesn’t seem good.

Because Captain Crozier deliberately sent them through unsecured channels, and deliberately sent them to 22 different people, most of whom were not in the chain of command.

Also, Crozier's superior, Admiral Stuart Baker, was aboard ship at the time Crozier sent his letter.

He could have just talked to the Admiral, but he chose to be a d*ck about it instead.

He’s SecNav, not SecDef

HIS boss should have been on top of things, assuming SecDef is still in his chain of command

Matters might not have gotten so far out of hand had the basic Department culture been a bit less ‘touchy-feely’ and more “let’s kill the enemy and break his things”

I hope Crozier gets well soon, and gets full retirement pay.

Who knows how many lives he saved on board that ship?

I agree. I will go even further and say IMHO the SECNAV didn't say anything wrong. Having read his whole speech, he made excellent points and the "either stupid or naive" remark was actually kinder than I think Crozier deserved. How unfortunate that he got badgered into apologizing. He should have stuck to those words like John Wayne.

A ship full of healthy young sailors was probably not going to turn into Floating Ship of Death. Even the captains of the cruise ships full of retired asthmatics didn’t freak out like this guy did. I’m Team Modly on this one.

“Crozier turned this directly into a bureaucratic and political cluster-frack. He’s not a hero. He’s pentagon hack using cheap sentiment as cover for his bureaucratic doosh-bagery.”

I’d be willing to bet the DNC tries to run the captain for Congress. He’d be perfect for the DNC.

He said something really stupid. You can’t fire someone for being stupid when you placed them in charge to begin with. Both him and the captain need to be shown the door.

He should have prefaced the declaration with the phrase
“I don’t know a lot about it but it appears that....”
Then invite all the parties over for a beer,.
Yeahth that’s the way, no questionables here
